chrisjHello all, since a recent update it seems like my $LANG is not being set correctly for whatever reason. I have done a 'dpkg-reconfigure locales' and my '/etc/default/locale' contains 'LANG=en_US.UTF-8' which seems right to me. However, when i run 'locale' I get just 'LANG=' and foot (at least) complains about 'C' locale at startup02:22

nlordellHey, I wanted to poke around at the Barebox code before installing it on my Pocket, but `https://source.mnt.re` does not appear to load for me (I get `HTTP 666` responses :P). According to <https://community.mnt.re/t/source-mnt-re-down/4412>, I am assuming this may be related to my IP being blocked. As mentioned there, I am here to kindly request getting unblocked.08:39
nlordellI don't know if it complicates things, but I pretty much always have a VPN on (note that I did try accessing `sources.mnt.re` with it off, and it still did not seem to work).08:40

minute(and use official unstable debian)14:53
minutethere's another person who didn't update the fw but did update the kernel/sw on imx8mp, and said boot showed a lot of errors but worked14:54

elbminute: I'm planning to attempt the firmware update today, if all goes well15:25

elbin classic elb fashion I am doing a major update to my teaching device one week before lectures start ;-)15:25
minutevkoskiv-m68k: nice, is it an amiga?15:28

elbbeautiful15:43
elbin my personal computing history, the point where I hit what I feel like is essentially parity with what I still have today (minus things like full screen streaming video) was at the very end of the 1990s, with more like 64 MB of RAM and a couple of 350 MHz cores (so just a scant few years after that 4 MB Macintosh Plus)15:44
elbin the time since we sure have used a lot more memory and clock cycles, but my on-screen applications and the things I do with my computer ... just haven't changed that much15:44
+ Svp (~svp@host-79-57-105-252.business.telecomitalia.it)15:53
elbminute: all done, easy peasy, no glitches (including installing my patched keyboard matrix)15:55
elbhad to read my own documentation in pocket-hid/HACKING.md to remember the steps for flashing ;-)15:56
elbafter summer is over and regular paychecks resume I plan to get a mb 2.0, keyboard 2.0, and some associated bits so that I can hopefully at some point resume looking at firmware things15:57
+ mjw (~mjw@gnu.wildebeest.org)16:02
minutevkoskiv-m68k: nice, kinda jealous now!16:03
minutevkoskiv-m68k: i brought my a1200 home but it's very unsatisfying so far without something like zz9000... can't connect it to anything to get a normal color image out of it, and for vga-like modes my older 27" lg (that still has vga) has trouble syncing to the pixelclock / makes nasty moires16:04
minuteelb: amazing!16:05
elbam I correct that I can remove /boot/boot.scr entirely, now?16:06
elbbarebox is using /boot/extlinux/..., correct?16:07
- voltaire28 (QUIT: Ping timeout: 265 seconds) (~jlafon@28.162.2.93.rev.sfr.net)16:07
minuteelb: yes you can remove boot.scr, but the released barebox doesn't handle extlinux correctly, afaik it uses /boot/loader/entries mainly16:07
elbahh I see, thank you16:08
minuteelb: i have a newer build of barebox in the repo that supposedly fixes some extlinux parsing bugs (contributed by stephano), but couldn't test that yet16:08
elbwell when I inevitably fall into procrastination mode because I'm too far behind on teaching in the next week or two maybe I'll try that ;-)16:08
+ voltaire28 (~jlafon@28.162.2.93.rev.sfr.net)16:09
minutehaha :D16:11
elbthere is only the one barebox release, correct?16:11
elbreform-check seems to recognize that I am running barebox, but says it's out of date; I assume what it means by that is that I'm not running the current u-boot?16:11
elbjosch: this is probably a question for you :-)16:19
joschelb: MNT didn't make barebox the official bootloader (yet) so as far as "official-ness" goes (which is what reform-check checks), u-boot is "newer" than barebox16:20
elbjosch: great, that's what I thought I was seeing but I wanted to confirm, thank you!16:20
joschvkoskiv: nice @ m68k :D16:21
elbI read the MNT forums daily and try to keep up with things, but because of the nature of discourse topic management sometimes it's hard to understand if I might have lost track of something16:21
elbprobably a wiki or summary page (or even just a pinned post that can't have a million unrelated comments put on it by users) someplace that lists the current state of affairs with a little rubric of "currently recommended", "normal if you're not on the cutting edge", "in testing", etc., with links to the related threads would be helpful, although I realize that's one more thing to maintain16:22
vkoskiv-m68kminute: The main thing keeping me from playing with my A500 more is the display situation. The only display I have that works with it is a monochrome green CRT16:22
vkoskiv-m68kI did get a HDMI adapter thing for it, but the latency was way too big, and I'm generally not a fan of using vintage systems with LCD displays.16:23
elbI put my A500 on my desk at work in the hopes that students would play with it, but so far I get very few takers, and they all just say "ew what is that sound" when I turn on the monitor16:23

elbvkoskiv-m68k: no, the 15 kHz whine16:25
joschelb: about boot.scr -- flash-kernel will regenerate it. You can also remove flash-kernel *if* your reform-tools is new enough.16:25
elbmy reform-tools is current16:25
+ voltaire28 (~jlafon@28.162.2.93.rev.sfr.net)16:25

elbI only removed boot.scr to reduce the volume of reform-check output ;-)16:25
minutevkoskiv-m68k: i'm thinking to roll my own rgb-hdmi thing, but actually, on a500 i already have a better solution, the denise adapter for zz9000. that could also be minified. but i'd like aga, and not a bigbox at home16:42

nlordellminute: Not too worried about the fw/linux update as I'm already on 20260808/7.1.3 (josch's trixie-backports); I'm mostly interested in barebox because I want to play around booting into OpenBSD.21:45
nlordellAFAIK, there is a single barebox release, and you also shared a different newer build on the forums, and I wanted to look and try to understand which version I should try.21:46

nlordellAFAIU, the newer build does an extra display reset at some point, and wonder if I should use that instead. From the boot logs, I have a display V2 in case that matters.21:46

joschminute: it works. You can now edit files directly in the kernel tree, create commits without fiddling with patches and the pipeline gives you a *.deb package to install within 14 minutes: https://source.mnt.re/josch/linux/-/jobs/2380222:04
