casparvitchHi all! I am trying to use josch's debian (stable) installer (https://reform.debian.net/). I have it on an sd card, but when I boot the system I just get my regular (eMMC) install. It *seems* to find the sd card (mmc2?), see logs below. Maybe I should interrupt the boot & try playing around? https://pastebin.com/g8GU3Pdd around03:28

minutech: which script were you referring to? my pocket keyboard update script?13:13
minutech: if so, it exists mainly to deal with all weird situations 13:13
minutech: there's even a retry loop in there now around picotool in case your cable is bad (or whatever causes disruptions)13:14
- shtrophic (QUIT: Ping timeout: 252 seconds) (~m-hrdsqi@user/shtrophic)13:14
casparvitchch: only slightly different without sd card - https://pastebin.com/KVy4WdPe - (& no diff if DIP switch is in 'ON' not '1' position). 13:18
+ shtrophic (~m-hrdsqi@user/shtrophic)13:19
chminute: yes the keyboard update script. does it deal with 'rp2040 is already in programming mode'?13:37
minutech: aha! let me check13:38
minutecasparvitch: which dip switch do you mean? maybe i can shed some light here13:38
casparvitchminute: thanks! I think it's called the system controller switch in the docs?13:40
minute(sorry i wasn't able to give support here in the last days... needed a break on the weekend and yesterday needed to focus on qcs module)13:40
minutecasparvitch: could you summarize your current situation and problem with the device for me? what i gathered is you're on a pocket reform with imx8mplus 13:41
minutecasparvitch: but i don't understand what the system controller switch has to do with uboot 13:41
casparvitchno worries at all, I don't have an issue per-se. I am trying to install debian stable. There was a note somewhere in josch's docs about a dip switch setting the boot order but perhaps that was another switch13:42
casparvitchmy 'issue' is that when I boot with the sd card in, I go straight to my regular/emmc install & not the sd card installer13:43

+ shtrophic (~m-hrdsqi@user/shtrophic)14:04
minutecasparvitch: ok got it. the DIP switch only applies to classic reform and the classic imx8mq module. 14:17
minutecasparvitch: if you set the system controller DIP switch to "ON", and the system controller resets, the device is unusable14:17
minutecasparvitch: so make sure to set it to off (which is ironically labeled "1" on the switch)14:18
casparvitchha ok thanks I won't touch it again :)14:19
casparvitchgoing afk (bed) now, will check logs tmrw in case anyone has any pointers but thanks regardless 🙏14:21
minutecasparvitch: if the pocket fails to boot debian stable from SD, i think josch is the right person who can help14:21
joschcasparvitch: yes, support for reform.d.n is me not minute :)14:22
joschcasparvitch: the problem becomes a problem for MNT if you cannot boot your imx8mplus from an sd-card14:23
joschcasparvitch: so maybe to rule out that there is a problem with your sd-card, could you flash a normal system image on the same sd-card and see if that boots?14:23

- casparvitch (QUIT: Ping timeout: 252 seconds) (~casparvit@36.255.114.132)14:25
joschcasparvitch: also thanks a lot for your serial logs, that really helps! It looks like u-boot just doesn't find anything on the sd-card but you can see in the log that it checks14:25

minutejosch: maybe for clarification: imx8mplus cannot boot directly from SD card. only indirectly via eMMC15:07
+ shtrophic (~m-hrdsqi@user/shtrophic)15:07
minutejosch: so for the debian stable image to work, it has to be compatible with our imx8mplus uboot on emmc15:07
joschminute: yes, u-boot is getting loader from emmc and according to the serial output it fails to load extlinx.conf from the first partition of the sd-card. According to the log it's also the latest u-boot for imx8mplus15:10
joschin the reform-tools machine.conf files we have this recorded as:15:11
joschSD_BOOT=false15:11
joschthis prevents reform-flash-uboot to flash u-boot onto an sd-card if you are on ixm8mplus because it would be useless to do so15:11
joschminute: but thank you for confirming this, there are so many corner cases with these socs...15:11
joschlike rk3588 which can load u-boot from sd-card but only if it fails to find something on emmc15:13
minutejosch: correct. 15:15
minutejosch: i just wanted to refresh our memories on this ^^ so then the question is why does it fail to find extlinux?15:15
joschyes, so i think trying to boot a regular system image that uses extlinux, like the reform-system-any would be a good next step15:16
minutegot it15:16
minuteyes15:16
joschor falling back to u-boot console and looking manually15:16
joschminute: nice to see you back here :)15:17
joschi also saw the posts how you are crunshing through your backlog of orders these days -- super cool to hear :)15:17
minutejosch: yes, that crunching is mostly other people in the team but i'm helping here and there. 15:19
minutejosch: but i also need to have a bit more private time on weekends as i'm a bit overworked15:19

grimmwaregordon1: nah, it still stops there. Part of me is tempted to write a simulator for it so I can actually try writing code on the thing but a lot of me knows I'm more likely to work on other stuff.16:33
grimmwareThere's also part of me that wants to try and actually build it...16:34
gordon1grimmware: give turing complete a try if you're fine with graphical mouse-draggin programming instead of a HDL, it goes past the CPU stage16:34
gordon1(or just buy colorlight i9 fpga board and do it in real hw)16:35
grimmwaregordon1: I've put it on my wishlist!16:36
grimmwarelike I say I'm going to do a bunch of TIS-100 and not get nerdsniped on my shitty instruction count first, and then probably a bit of shenzhen i/o16:36
grimmwareI've played both to a limited degree before but the pocket just seems like the perfect platform to play both on :)16:37
