digitalranejosch: with NixOS, at this stage, it's unlikely I'll push to have things included in nixpkgs (the main repo, kinda like a mix between Debian main + nonfree + etc.). It's fairly common for hardware support packages like this to live outside of nixpkgs (the main repository) so things can be nicely coupled into a working image, and then for the package to provide NixOS options & overlays. It could be done, but I think there's less benefit than...01:24
digitalrane... with something like Debian or upstreaming in the Kernel.01:24

joschdigitalrane: upstreaming in the kernel? i see you are thinking big now :)07:22
joschdigitalrane: you are compiling 6.12 or 6.14 for nixos? You notified me last week that our 6.12 patch stack is missing hdptxphy1 from https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/master/arch/arm64/boot/dts/rockchip/rk3588-rock-5b.dts#L52 -- do you have a tested patch for 6.12 for the necessary dts changes?07:51

joschxha: which system image did you download?17:41
xhathis one: https://source.mnt.re/reform/reform-system-image/-/jobs/9964/artifacts/raw/pocket-reform-system-rk3588.img.gz17:42
xhai think i got it from some redirect from the mnt site.. i am really not sure why it fixed it. it might've been something else, dunno (but i didn't change anything..).17:44
joschxha: are you sure your system was up-to-date? The kernel on that system image is the latest one.17:44
xhayeah, pretty sure. the kernel was 6.14.6 or something i belive17:45
xhai think you should just not pay attention to my case. i don't know what went wrong. it doesn't make sense to be that the device tree wasn't up-to-date :D17:45
xhathanks for the help though :)17:46
joschxha: 6.14.6 is only the "upstream" Debian kernel. We put patches on top of that. So the interesting part is in the date-based version behind it.17:48
joschEssentially, running "apt full-upgrade" should not install anything.17:48
xhai did "apt update && apt upgrade". that's what i am always doing. is that wrong?17:48
joschxha: also, while you might've found a workaround, the next time you upgrade, the kernel will overwrite your manual copy17:49
joschxha: when you are running stable, "apt update && apt upgrade" is sufficient17:49
joschbut you are running unstable, so there will regularly be packages which require the removal of others to be installable or upgradable17:49
joschand "apt upgrade" will not remove packages -- it's meant to be for users of stable systems where package removal is a big no-no17:50
joschalso, "apt upgrade" (because it doesn't remove things) will not give you auto-removal of old kernels17:50
xhayeah using apt autoremove for that17:50
joschso other users already ran into the problem that their /boot became too tiny because they accumulated too many kernel versions after having only run "apt upgrade" instead of "apt full-upgrade"17:50
joschah okay17:50
joschbut apt autoremove is only a partial solution17:51
joschautoremove does not remove the things blocking the installation or upgrading of new packages17:51
joschand autoremove also does not autoremove old kernels17:51
xha.. i think it does?17:51
joschoh then maybe that changed, sorry17:52
xhait look like it was doing that thing.. dunno17:52
xhathe device tree problem could've also just been a thing because i've been playing around with custom kernels where i did some modifications to panthor. might've installed something weird there. i'm gonna report back if that problem comes back again in the next kernel version, but since noone else had that problem.. i doubt it?17:54
xhathank you for the explaination with apt!17:54
joschxha: grimmware had the problem you describe with v1 display and 6.14 on the pocket17:55

joschminute: i think i now know the source of my confusion regarding the 6.14 rk3588 dts on 6.12. The crux is the renaming of hdptxphy_hdmi0 to hdptxphy0 in https://web.git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=2efdb041019fd6c58abefba3eb6fdc4d659e576c and linux/rk3588-mnt-reform2.dts uses *both* naming schemes, the old and the new one. So it uses hdptxphy_hdmi0 (the old naming) as 23:58
joschwell as dptxphy1 (the new naming)23:58
josch*as well as hdptxphy1 (the new naming)23:58
