vagrantcwill have to test it a bit more later to make sure01:10

joschDebian live-build boots on the Reform \o/08:33
+ aloo_shu (~aloo_shu@90.166.99.224)10:02
joschminute: now that I have Debian live images booting on the Reform, would it not be a nice user experience if they would boot into a live system which behaves the same way as the other Debian live ISO images and then they can install Debian on their Reform using the Calamares installer instead of running reform-specific scripts in a shell?11:00
minutejosch: how can i test this installer?11:04
joschminute: if you have an amd64 box around, then you can test it using images from here: https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/weekly-live-builds/amd64/iso-hybrid/11:04
joschi think it's the installer that ubuntu uses11:04
joschso you first boot into a live desktop installation and then you click a button to launch the gtk installer11:05
joschi can upload one of the images i'm currently building in case you are interested -- but the calamares installer might need some patching because it currently does not know how to flash u-boot or select the right dtb for imx8mq11:06
minutejosch: ok... my original plan was to add an install step to setup wizard, and am waiting for my colleagues to make progress on this. but i'll try out your suggestion as well11:09

minutejosch: yes that's good, at the very least for ux comparison i want to test it11:56
minutejosch: but i don't have amd64 at home 11:56
joschhaha nice :)11:56
minutewell, i have a ps5 but it doesn't boot live isos :/11:56

+ paperManu (~paperManu@172.93.30.55)12:11
joschminute: I've built an arm64 image which should be able to run on all Reform platforms which have a modern u-boot on eMMC (still uploading, will post the link in half an hour)12:18
minutejosch: great, looking forward to try it!12:18
joschminute: until then, here is a shaky cam video of how it looks like so that you don't go through the trouble of flashing and booting if you don't like it: http://mister-muffin.de/reform/P5080156.MOV12:18
joschrunning on imx8mq reform12:19
minutejosch: oh nice. soo gnome is usable on 8mq? i also need to check again on 8mp12:20
minuteso the live iso should be useful for that as well12:20
joschminute: yes, gnome works just fine on imx8mq12:20
minutecool12:21
joschit's just that video playback is broken thanks to gtk 4.1812:21
+ jacobk (~quassel@47-186-65-73.dlls.tx.frontiernet.net)12:26
joschminute: https://mister-muffin.de/reform/live-image-arm64.img12:35
joschminute: that image is also using the technique i want to use to have one system images for all platform12:35
josch(this also means it does not contain u-boot and has to rely on u-boot on eMMC)12:35
josch(but it has the first partition at an offset of 16MiB in case you need to flash u-boot to it as well)12:36
joschalso talking about system images, I dread the process of first opening the MR of the system image I want in a browser, then clicking on the pipeline, then clicking on the job, then clicking on artifacts, then clicking on the system image I want and then right-clicking to get the URL to the system image I want to flash with bmaptool. So I now created a MR which, at the end of the build log prints the 12:39
josch"bmaptool copy" command which I can then just copypaste to my terminal to flash the image from that job to an sd-card. Looks like this: https://source.mnt.re/reform/reform-system-image/-/jobs/988112:39
joschby using "glab ci trace" I then don't even need to open the browser anymore as I can see the build log and the flash commands in my terminal12:40

grimmwareThe one I'm a bit stuck on is Blender, I'd love to be casually pootling around with 3D models on my pocket15:38
jfredYeah, the one I'm stuck on at times is some 3D CAD for modeling 3D printable/CNC routable designs. Haven't had much luck getting a lot of those to run16:05
jfredI'm woefully underinformed on graphics programming, but I feel like a lot of the compatibility issues have to do with things targeting OpenGL and SBCs only supporting GLES. Wondering if Vulkan will be more of a common ground as things start to target that16:09

kfxjosch: what constitutes a modern u-boot in this context?18:16
* bkeys1 -> bkeys18:19
joschkfx: in this context, your u-boot must be able to do the following a) read extlinux/extlinux.conf from the first partition of sd-card and b) set the device tree path in ${fdtfile} in its env so that the right dtb can get loaded from /dtbs/18:25
joschancient u-boot on imx8mq classic reform does not do a)18:25
joschand by accident, the very first pocket reform with imx8mplus have a u-boot flashed which does not do b)18:26

josch(I also just built an imx8mq image locally)19:55
minuteok, will rerun19:56
minutejosch: ah yeah, it was likely a glitch20:14
hramrachwould be nicer to use EFI than extlinux because it would be compatible with more distributions but at least something somewhat standardized is good20:35
hramrachwith EFI you probably would not need any changes to the installer whatsoever20:35
kfxI haven't found a u-boot for the imx8q whose efi implementation does anything but crash trying to run efi programs :/20:36
hramrachthe upstream u-boot supports enough EFI to run grub and/or linux, running anything else will likely crash20:41
hramrachalso downstream manufacturer u-boot forks are often wild in what they change and how much20:42
