joschminute: while you are here, could you add a new tag to https://source.mnt.re/reform/reform-handbook/-/tags then i can package it and upload it to unstable01:13
minutejosch: aw, i don't have my keys on this computer...01:13
joschno stress, i'm heading off to bed now anyways :D01:14
minutejosch: ok, will do it as soon as i have access again :D good night!01:14

joschyup, imx8mq got stuck over night again07:14
joschkeyboard still on but nothing on dmesg (was connected to serial) and dead on the network07:15
joschthis reminds me of the effect I saw years ago when I still had my own imx8mq reform07:27
joschbut back then the problem was seemingly fixed by avoiding dmps off in swayidle07:27
joschand right now I'm using: exec swayidle -w timeout 300 'brightnessctl set 0%'   resume 'brightnessctl set 100%' timeout 600 'swaylock -f -c 000000'07:27
joschnow disabling swayidle completely... lets see if this makes things different07:34

BoostisBettervery interested in your results. The system just being unresponsive after a night of timing out and swayidle active happened to me all the time on the Reform. 09:36
joschBoostisBetter: on the classic Reform or Pocket Reform?09:38
BoostisBetterboth09:38
BoostisBetterbut on the pocket since the keyboard has been wonky, and the hub not responsive I don't think we can see it as the same issues. 09:39

joschminute: I managed to trigger the imx8mq hang-up with the graphical artifacts again: https://mister-muffin.de/p/cmfT.jpg14:37
joschthe machine was just idling in firefox for a few hours14:37
minutejosch: hmm, but firefox again like last time...14:38
joschyes14:38
joschi tried to reproduce it and it was firefox last time14:38
joschthis time, i had it connected to wifi as well as to serial14:38
joschand i had dmesg -wT running over serial but no output14:38
joschthe machine is dead on both serial and ssh14:38
minutejosch: hmm :/ to find out if its gpu, you could try running ff with LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=114:40
joschand if it then does not crash then it might be gpu?14:40
minutejosch: to find out if it's dcss vs lcdif, you could run with the dual screen dtb14:41
minutejosch: yes14:41
joschdebugging this will take a while because the problem is so rare14:41
minutejosch: (i don't know which dtb you're using atm)14:41
joschsingle14:41
minutejosch: yeah, i can't look into it myself so only if you're interested in finding a cause14:41
joschwell, that's precisely why BoostisBetter borrowed me his machine, so that's what i'll do :)14:42
minutecould be anything incl hw issue with the module14:42
joschat least i'm not stuck to it via serial anymore if there is no output on dmesg :/14:43
BoostisBetterjosch: you're awesome!14:44
BoostisBetterminute: you are too!14:45
joschBoostisBetter: your machine has been really useful indeed. First to track down the suspend regression, then to find the gtk gl renderer regression, then to test all the new changes in reform-debian-packages...14:45

joschhrm... I might have (at least temporarily) fixed my hinge problem: https://mister-muffin.de/p/MXfU.jpg15:59
joschi drilled into the welding spots with a 2 mm metal drill, slightly widening them16:00
joschand now M2 screws are able to hold both parts together16:01
minutejosch: DIY to the max :D16:10
joschwell... the "to the max" part is the fact that for some reason I do not have any M2 nuts here... but I *did* have these: https://minischrauben.com/gewindeeinsatz-zum-einpresssen-m-2-x-4-2mm-messing-10-stueck-071-m2-1016:20
joschbut they are slightly too long for the room in the bottom case, so I had to shorten two of them XD16:21
joschhttps://mister-muffin.de/p/wfVc.jpg16:22
minuteoh wow ok :D16:26
joschooookay, the tft screen is held in place by the frame itself and has no additional screws to hold in in place -- TIL XD16:40
joschthese two washers at the bottom center are also interesting16:41
joschyay my reform is fixed again \o/16:58
joschin the meantime the imx8mq reform is hung displaying firefox again -- that was quick. Lets try LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 next16:58
joschi'm now also running 6.12 from backports with a311d dts patched instead of copied for more testing before merging it. I also have that kernel installed on my MM Board Reform (where i have kodi running) and hdmi and audio etc work just as they usually do. :)17:01
minutejosch: yeah the washers are a fix for that edition of the screen case where the two platforms are a bit to short, so you could overscrew and bend the part17:14
minutejosch: nice @ a311d17:14

- LainIwakura41 (QUIT: Ping timeout: 240 seconds) (~LainIwaku@user/LainIwakura)17:22
joschhrm... now that my hinge works again this gets me thinking... it was probably not the smartest idea to carry around my reform by holding it on its display only as often as I did XD17:36
minuteeeep :D 17:46
joschinstead of taking responsibility for my own actions I can just blame whoever designed this thing to look and feel as sturdy as it does and figuratively *made me* not take care when handling it ;)18:11
joschmy take-away message: have all the replacement parts at home in advance!18:12
josch"in the old days" me and my partner both had thinkpads and then we had a third older thinkpad (all T-series) that we used for parts when something in our machines broke18:12
joschwe're about to get there with MNT products18:12
joschunfortunately the Reform Next wasn't ready 2 years ago when my partner needed a new laptop but it's likely to become its successor :)18:13
- gordon1 (QUIT: Ping timeout: 252 seconds) (~gordon1@citadel.niflheim.info)18:37
BoostisBetterYeah the Next is really a nice improvement on the Reform Classic. I think the design of the Classis will live on forever because it is excellent, but the Next is bringing it to a more modern era with plenty of respect to the old school still made. 18:48
+ gordon1 (~gordon1@citadel.niflheim.info)18:49
joschSome of the best moments I have with this device are the moments when I can show it off to others by "turning it upside down" and then the other person goes "woooaaah". It's certainly a very special audience who enjoys showing off the best laptop on the planet this way. Some people just want the "normal" experience, so they settle for the second best. ;)18:55

chorcI19:29
chorcI'm still considering ordering a classic, although Pocket feels like a dream machine for my use case19:30
chorcMaybe I'll settle on Reform Desktop for a backup machine19:30
grimmwareI'm kind of waiting on a desktop equivalent that uses the pocket mainboard so I can put my imx8mp in it and then I know I have a sacrificial backup should I need it19:48
grimmwarejosch: fwiw I pick my pocket up by the lid all the time19:49
grimmwareI was actually thinking about 3d printing a handle for it heh19:49
zehai guess the pocket has a different weight distribution :)19:52
chorchm, a handle is an interesting challenge; I've so far added some bumpons to the bottom to make it easier to pickup19:56
joschgrimmware: what would speak against putting your imx8mp into the desktop reform instead of a desktop equivalent with the pocket mobo?19:57
grimmwarejosch: so that if my main pocket mobo breaks I can pillage the spare20:35
grimmwaresame thing as you really, I'd like to have enough dupe parts locally that if I'm down I'm not down for very long20:36
joschhm... we certainly need the pocket mainboard by itself buyable in the store and then somebody could easily create a 3d printed case for it or something :)20:38

BoostisBetterThe only thing I think would be awesome if if the pocket connections were a seperate board similar to how the next is going to work. It is just that the charging port is getting used so much and it is going to wear out before anything else. That would be a good way to mitigate that issue. 21:39

L29AhBoostisBetter: you can use a $5 magnetic usb c kludge so it wears out instead of the port21:48
BoostisBettergood point. I have a bunch of those. I just need the new kb and my pocket will be good to go again. 21:53
