AsmadeusProbably should wait for minute's answer but I'd guess the answer to all of that is "batch sizes" -- making just a few boards is way more expensive, but to make it at a reasonable price you need to make many so it's a huge investisment that is hard to make without being sure people will buy them. Just the CPU chips can get very expensive (and/or long lead times) when buying less than thousands06:32

Asmadeusrazzy: I believe the "processor module" includes another som that is identical to what you could probably buy somewhere else, but it also has other components (e.g. ethernet phy etc) and is custom made to "fit" into the reform motherboard. https://source.mnt.re/reform/mnt-reform-rk3588-som seems to say 'Firefly iCore RK3588Q' is the module used, so you pay for that as well as the other components, 16:16
