joschokay, i got a diff against the upstream imx8mq dts for the reform which gives me display support, lpc and wifi: https://paste.debian.net/hidden/f2d32549/01:12
joschmaybe somebody in the channel can understand *why* this works and can submit it upstream?01:13
joschoh suspend broke... hrm...01:18

joschcool :) then from now on, lets patch the dts that got upstreamed instead of overwriting it: https://source.mnt.re/reform/reform-debian-packages/-/merge_requests/8401:37
joschmaybe this can motivate somebody to submit this thing to the lkml01:37
chor bluerise wants to upstream it?01:37

abortretryfailI am not confident that is the "correct" way to fix recording, actually.13:18
abortretryfailIt works, but there was still some situation where it wouldn't and I wasn't able to track down exactly what was wrong.13:19
abortretryfailI think the recording on the codec is only clocked when playback is also running, which happens automatically with either pipewire or pulseaudio or something13:20
abortretryfailbut there was some situation where not running either of those and just trying to do arecord would still fail and I never could nail it down.13:20
abortretryfailI'm letting this thing get up to date then I will try the dts patch if I can remember how :D13:21

gl0bshould i be able to use the top USB-PD port on my RK3588 pocket reform to connect USB devices as the manual suggests? or is that SoM dependent?14:48
fricklergl0b: it does work for me, might depend on using recent enough firmware, though. new pocket or older one?15:03

[tj]one battery is at 30% and the other is "On" - do I just need to do a charge cycle?16:53
grimmware[tj]: those aren't per battery, they're just inline with the two battery voltage indicators16:56
[tj]that is confusing16:57
grimmware[tj]: it's due to the fact that the big reform has 8 battery indicators so the layout reflects that16:58
grimmwareright hand side is supposed to be summary information16:58
[tj]ah ha16:59
[tj]right now its only charing to 30%, then the draw drops from 25W to 7W16:59
frickler[tj]: what do the cell voltages say? something like 3.8 or 4.0?16:59
[tj]3.7 and 4.016:59
fricklerminute: ah, another case of unbalanced cells then17:00
frickler[tj]: seems the builtin balancing isn't able to resolve such a large delta17:00
fricklerthe instructions from eremit say the cells must be fully charged in parallel or individually before doing a serial setup as in the pocket17:01
fricklerI gave up on trying to balance mine and will just work with the new ones I bought17:02
fricklerone could try to do a lot of charge/discharge cycles, but I fear that this will also severely deteriorate cell health, which is why I stopped17:03

[tj]could I just pull the cells and run them down externally to the same voltage and then put them back in?17:09
frickler[tj]: if you happen to have a feasible charger to do that, that should work17:09
[tj]couldn't I just use the pocket reform?17:10
[tj]like, take them down to 3v and then let the pocket charge them now they are balanced?17:10

[tj]https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/19529601553917:17
[tj]was the difference 0.2?17:17
[tj]mine are alt-j 0.2V now17:17
gl0byeah, difference of 0.217:17
gl0bi forget the exact voltage on delivery, but the 0.2 difference was consistent for the first few days17:18
fricklermine started out at 0.4, went to 0.2 and then got worse again. maybe you can be lucky with just doing some cycles, then17:21
ericsfragaI got my Pocket running again. The question I now have is: I have a 128GB SD card. Should I use that as my main disk or should I use the one built into the Pocket (same size)?17:30

abortretryfailSD/eMMC are kinda slow17:30
ericsfragaBy the way, the problem is that the installation of lightdm links from the systemd display manager to a location that does not exist (/lib/lightdm when it should be /usr/bin/lightdm, I believe).17:30
ericsfragaabortretryfail: thanks; long term, SSD is the way to go. The speed of SD or eMMC is fine for my use case for the moment.17:31
ericsfraga* /usr/sbin/lightdm17:32
chso youre saying lightdm just plainly doesnt work?17:35
ericsfragach: yes, when I configured the system (by apt install) for lightdm, it stopped working in that the X window system hung on trying to get the DM log in screen. I had to boot via SD to fix it. Took some time to figure out where and how systemd starts the log in screen and that's where I found that the link was wrong. I have not tried booting with the correct link; went back to sway for the time being.17:37

ericsfragaActually, the link should have been to /lib/systemd...17:44
ericsfragaWhen I get a chance, I'll try again.17:45
[tj]I took the battery to 0% in wayfire and 2% on the monitor17:45
[tj]I also wrote 300 words of an article to help the battery drain17:46
frickler[tj]: if you are adventorous, you could also install a patched sysctl-fw and get more detailed battery status info via the internal serial connection17:50
[tj]I have a jtag probe and I'm not scared to use it!17:50
frickleryou'd have to uncomment this line, build and load the resulting .uf2 https://source.mnt.re/reform/pocket-reform/-/blob/main/pocket-reform-sysctl-fw/inc/sysctl.h?ref_type=heads#L2117:52
[tj]cool, I will think about this tomorrow17:52
[tj]I need to move to nvme and encrypt it17:52

fricklerch: I had to double-check to confirm I'm not misremembering, but my small ethernet adapter does work on the "PD" port and I'd be surprised if it actually knew something about pd, or does it? is there a way to verify?18:24
chwell, it shouldnt work if it doesnt :)18:24
chif it speaks PD you should see some debug output when plugging it18:25
chotoh if you always see ON AC, you might be in luck18:26
fricklerweird kind of luck ;) but yes, I still see that indeed18:30

mraright after the funding campaign for the new reform closes, my laptop starts having dead lines on the screen D_:18:34
mradidn't buy a next because it felt wasteful since I already own a working laptop18:35
joschmakes sense -- i also only bought the classic reform after my old thinkpad was practically dead (plastic case gave up)19:24
joschmra: do note that the reform next will not be out for a while, so even if you had joined the pre-order you probably would need to wait quite a bit19:25
spewmight be faster to buy a classic v3 since I believe those should be going out next19:35
spewnot that I know anything, I'm just following on mastodon19:35
joschyup, some people are waiting for their classic reform since march 2024...19:40
joschit all was stuck on the motherboard 3.0 which now got ordered19:40

gl0bso after migrating root to nvme using reform-setup-encrypted-nvme, is my /boot still supposed to be on emmc? (RK3588 pocket)21:27
joschgl0b: yes, until u-boot is able to read the /boot partition from nvme22:07
joschgl0b: theoretically that should work with upstream u-boot but i don't know what's missing and i haven't heard of somebody having pulled it off yet22:07
gl0bgreat, understood. i had to fiddle around a little to get the script to cooperate so i wanted to double check.22:10
