[tj] | one battery is at 30% and the other is "On" - do I just need to do a charge cycle? | 16:53 |
grimmware | [tj]: those aren't per battery, they're just inline with the two battery voltage indicators | 16:56 |
[tj] | that is confusing | 16:57 |
grimmware | [tj]: it's due to the fact that the big reform has 8 battery indicators so the layout reflects that | 16:58 |
grimmware | right hand side is supposed to be summary information | 16:58 |
[tj] | ah ha | 16:59 |
[tj] | right now its only charing to 30%, then the draw drops from 25W to 7W | 16:59 |
frickler | [tj]: what do the cell voltages say? something like 3.8 or 4.0? | 16:59 |
[tj] | 3.7 and 4.0 | 16:59 |
frickler | minute: ah, another case of unbalanced cells then | 17:00 |
frickler | [tj]: seems the builtin balancing isn't able to resolve such a large delta | 17:00 |
frickler | the instructions from eremit say the cells must be fully charged in parallel or individually before doing a serial setup as in the pocket | 17:01 |
frickler | I gave up on trying to balance mine and will just work with the new ones I bought | 17:02 |
frickler | one could try to do a lot of charge/discharge cycles, but I fear that this will also severely deteriorate cell health, which is why I stopped | 17:03 |
[tj] | frickler: was there a forum thread or were you working on this here? | 17:06 |
- murph_nj (QUIT: Ping timeout: 260 seconds) (~murph@pool-108-35-93-154.nwrknj.fios.verizon.net) | 17:08 | |
frickler | [tj]: just here in the channel over the last two weeks on and off, you can check the logs if you want | 17:08 |
[tj] | could I just pull the cells and run them down externally to the same voltage and then put them back in? | 17:09 |
frickler | [tj]: if you happen to have a feasible charger to do that, that should work | 17:09 |
[tj] | couldn't I just use the pocket reform? | 17:10 |
[tj] | like, take them down to 3v and then let the pocket charge them now they are balanced? | 17:10 |
[tj] | I know nothing of batteries | 17:10 |
frickler | oh, wait, you said run down ... what load would you use? | 17:10 |
[tj] | a fan? | 17:11 |
[tj] | the first "battery load" I find with the correct connector | 17:11 |
frickler | I guess that could work, then. do you have a multimeter to verify the cell voltages? | 17:13 |
[tj] | yeah I have an electronics habbit | 17:14 |
[tj] | but you don't need one | 17:15 |
[tj] | https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/276439153213 | 17:15 |
[tj] | you could use that to keep your tea warm | 17:16 |
gl0b | fwiw mine were 0.2 out upon arrival, but they've levelled out over the week i've been using them | 17:17 |
[tj] | https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/195296015539 | 17:17 |
[tj] | was the difference 0.2? | 17:17 |
[tj] | mine are alt-j 0.2V now | 17:17 |
gl0b | yeah, difference of 0.2 | 17:17 |
gl0b | i forget the exact voltage on delivery, but the 0.2 difference was consistent for the first few days | 17:18 |
frickler | mine started out at 0.4, went to 0.2 and then got worse again. maybe you can be lucky with just doing some cycles, then | 17:21 |
ericsfraga | I got my Pocket running again. The question I now have is: I have a 128GB SD card. Should I use that as my main disk or should I use the one built into the Pocket (same size)? | 17:30 |
abortretryfail | Use a SSD if you can get one. | 17:30 |
abortretryfail | SD/eMMC are kinda slow | 17:30 |
ericsfraga | By the way, the problem is that the installation of lightdm links from the systemd display manager to a location that does not exist (/lib/lightdm when it should be /usr/bin/lightdm, I believe). | 17:30 |
ericsfraga | abortretryfail: thanks; long term, SSD is the way to go. The speed of SD or eMMC is fine for my use case for the moment. | 17:31 |
ericsfraga | * /usr/sbin/lightdm | 17:32 |
ch | so youre saying lightdm just plainly doesnt work? | 17:35 |
ericsfraga | ch: yes, when I configured the system (by apt install) for lightdm, it stopped working in that the X window system hung on trying to get the DM log in screen. I had to boot via SD to fix it. Took some time to figure out where and how systemd starts the log in screen and that's where I found that the link was wrong. I have not tried booting with the correct link; went back to sway for the time being. | 17:37 |

ericsfraga | Actually, the link should have been to /lib/systemd... | 17:44 |
ericsfraga | When I get a chance, I'll try again. | 17:45 |
[tj] | I took the battery to 0% in wayfire and 2% on the monitor | 17:45 |
[tj] | I also wrote 300 words of an article to help the battery drain | 17:46 |
frickler | [tj]: if you are adventorous, you could also install a patched sysctl-fw and get more detailed battery status info via the internal serial connection | 17:50 |
[tj] | I have a jtag probe and I'm not scared to use it! | 17:50 |
frickler | you'd have to uncomment this line, build and load the resulting .uf2 https://source.mnt.re/reform/pocket-reform/-/blob/main/pocket-reform-sysctl-fw/inc/sysctl.h?ref_type=heads#L21 | 17:52 |
[tj] | cool, I will think about this tomorrow | 17:52 |
[tj] | I need to move to nvme and encrypt it | 17:52 |

frickler | ch: I had to double-check to confirm I'm not misremembering, but my small ethernet adapter does work on the "PD" port and I'd be surprised if it actually knew something about pd, or does it? is there a way to verify? | 18:24 |
ch | well, it shouldnt work if it doesnt :) | 18:24 |
ch | if it speaks PD you should see some debug output when plugging it | 18:25 |
ch | otoh if you always see ON AC, you might be in luck | 18:26 |
frickler | weird kind of luck ;) but yes, I still see that indeed | 18:30 |

mra | didn't buy a next because it felt wasteful since I already own a working laptop | 18:35 |
josch | makes sense -- i also only bought the classic reform after my old thinkpad was practically dead (plastic case gave up) | 19:24 |
josch | mra: do note that the reform next will not be out for a while, so even if you had joined the pre-order you probably would need to wait quite a bit | 19:25 |
spew | might be faster to buy a classic v3 since I believe those should be going out next | 19:35 |
spew | not that I know anything, I'm just following on mastodon | 19:35 |
josch | yup, some people are waiting for their classic reform since march 2024... | 19:40 |

gl0b | so after migrating root to nvme using reform-setup-encrypted-nvme, is my /boot still supposed to be on emmc? (RK3588 pocket) | 21:27 |
josch | gl0b: yes, until u-boot is able to read the /boot partition from nvme | 22:07 |
josch | gl0b: theoretically that should work with upstream u-boot but i don't know what's missing and i haven't heard of somebody having pulled it off yet | 22:07 |
