joschthat reminds me: imx8mq-mnt-reform2.dts is already part of upstream linux but we still overwrite that with our own dts. The diff between them is quite large. Wasn't there some tool which normalizes/sorts/formats a dts? I'd like to minimize the differences while i still have the imx8mq at home...15:02
minutebluerise: interesting. more fine grained is better always 15:12
midfavilajosch wait you can use mainline kernels for the imx8mq now?15:14
midfavilasince when was that a thing?15:14
midfavilaor am i misunderstanding?15:14
joschmidfavila: it somehow works but i forgot which things do not15:14
joschi think display wasn't working? i'll try again tonight15:14
midfavilaaaaah15:14
midfavilawell, if you get it to work fully on mainline lmk15:14
midfavilai'm (slowly) working on porting KISS to the reform again15:14
midfavilabeing able to use the standard kernel would be really nice15:15
midfavilanow to get clockworkpi to release their sources in a way that's gpl compliant so that can get upstreamed... then i'll hopefully be able to settle all of my devices on the same kernel15:15
midfavilathey're still using a fork of their OEM kernel which is like 5.4.xx15:16
midfavilaand they ship full fat ubuntu on a friggin 1ghz riscv chip with 1gb of ddr315:17

hramrachjosch: the dtc has an option to sort the tree. With that you can take two trees, look at the differences. Adjusting the trees to not differe is a manual process. Due to extensive use of includes the trees may differ in order but not content15:19
joschah it's dtc -s -- thank you! :)15:27

joschmidfavila: nope, does not boot with current upstream dts: https://mister-muffin.de/p/jzEI.txt20:46
chdoesnt seem that far away though20:48
kfxstill can't believe the arm community managed to come up with a solution even worse than acpi.  truly amazing20:52
chconceptually its mostly the same. implementation however20:57
chi imagine acpi would also be way worse if more vendors would be involved 20:58
joschch: yes, the diff is not that large: https://paste.debian.net/hidden/c163edc7/21:03
joschi wish there was a way to not convert handle names into their addresses -- the diff mainly differs because of that21:03

ericsfragaGood evening all. Friday I received my Pocket Reform. Having a blast with it. However, today, I installed gdm3 (to get X windows, not wayland). That was fine (issues with screen rotation). Anyway, I got greedy and installed lightdm as well as I prefer it to gdm3. Now I cannot get the system to log me in: it gets stuck before X windows starts with a blinking cursor in the top left corner. Is there any way to get a shell window (normally 21:13
ericsfragaon X, I can A-C-F1 to get a console)?  Thanks.21:13
ericsfragaAlternatively, is there any way to interrupt the boot process to not get to the point of starting the graphical display?21:18
ericsfragaNote that I can kill X by A-C-arrow-Backspace (equivalent to Alt-ctrl-delete) but that leads to a restart of X again, getting stuck in the same blinking cursor state.21:20

hramrachericsfraga: if you are botting from SD card take it out, and disable the display manager service that starts X11. If not boot from a SD card and disable the service on the installed OS.21:42
hramrachnormally you could also alter the kernel commandline to not start the service but it's difficult with the current state of u-boot unless using serial console21:42
ericsfragaOkay; I don't have any SD cards to top of the TODO list for tomorrow morning!21:43
ericsfragaWhere is the best place to look for documentation on using an SD card (i.e. images etc.)?21:43
hramrachIt should be in the manual, there are some forum posts as well21:44
ericsfraga*so top21:44
ericsfragaOkay, thanks!21:44
kfxspecifically here https://mntre.com/documentation/pocket-reform-handbook/software.html#flashing-the-system-image21:45
ericsfragaYeah, just reading that section! :-)21:45
ericsfragaI was sure I had an old 8 GB micro-SD card lying around but no such luck. Lots of full size SD cards, mind you. ;-)21:47
ericsfragaTo clarify, it is not possible to type A-C-F1 to get a console from the graphical display?21:48
ericsfraga(i.e. with Arrow+1 as F1)21:48
hramrachif it can be killed it should be possible to switch to console as well21:49
hramrachbut if it breaks console (which the blinking suggests) it may not be all that helpful21:49
hramrach*cursor21:50
ericsfragaIt can be killed but seems to go into reboot process.21:50
ericsfragaThere's no way to interrupt the boot process and have it land in a recovery mode?21:51
