violetnot sure if this is a new or old thing but this evening i turned my pocket on and noticed that firefox was a lot slower than it usually is12:05
violetto make a long story short, i was on llvmpipe instead of my gpu driver. /dev/dri/renderD128 switched to being group "render" (i think it used to be group "video"? but of course i cannot check how it used to be now lol), and i needed to add my user to that group.12:06
violetthis is stock install it shipped with, ive just been apt upgrading now and then12:07
violetafter i did `usermod -a -G render <my_username>` everything was fast again12:08
hramrachthis should be probably automagically handled by user session setup 12:10
violetwell, i think it was caused by some update12:10
violetlike i say, i thought "wow this is slow, normally when i use this device its fast"12:11
hramrachmagic dissipated12:14

joschviolet: you have a pocket? with imx8mplus or another SoM? I have you noted down as imx8mq on classic reform user with debian stable. Did that change?12:40

violetjosch: i have a pocket with imx8mplus14:32
violethave been using it off and on14:34
violetthe classic reform is still on the shelf until i can get ahold of a new motherboard for it 14:37

joschviolet: okay, thank you -- i'll test the permissions of /dev/dri/renderD128 later when i'm home16:01
joschhere on classic reform with debian stable the device is owned by root:render16:01
minutejust made a little video of gnome 47 running on the reform next for this week's crowd supply update (which i'm finishing now) https://youtu.be/g4BnmHFu4qg16:02
joschwow, so much going on at the same time!16:08
joschanimations are so smooth! things happen instantly16:08
minuteflexing the rk3588 a little bit16:08
joschmakes me really excited for classic reform with rk3588 :D16:09
minuteoh yeah :D16:09
joschit looks very much like what i see from my partner's intel laptop :)16:09

minutejfred: i hacked blender into a state in which one can use the main UI a bit with the vulkan backend, but it crashes in the material editor, for example. it might be possible once panvk vulkan support has matured more.16:55
minutejfred: aaa games probably not, except someone comes up with a stable way to use a beefy eGPU on the RK3588 and we're lucky that those games are not mega cpu intensive16:55
+ UsrBinAnnika (~annika@109.255.154.246)17:09
minutebtw a word on gnome on the rk3588 pocket: it performs equally well on external display (@ scale 1, no rotation). but there are some weird perf issues on the internal rotated + scaled display which wlroots doesn't have... so i guess i'll have to file a few bug reports with gnome/mutter 17:09
minutefor example, animations in telegram-desktop stutter on the internal pocket display17:10
minuteand then also the cursor stutters17:10
minutethat's kind of unexpected on a gpu like this :D17:10
jfredminute: Yeah, I'm more interested in blender/similar 3D programs than AAA games haha - rk3588 is fast but it's not *that* fast :)17:19
jfredthis reminds me I need to try out libfive studio on my rk3588 reform soon17:20
jfredit ran initially on the imx8mp pocket with those GL version overrides but got crashy pretty quickly17:23

sevanam I being thick or if you raise a change and the build job times out, there's no way of retrying? the "Retry all failed or cancelled jobs" button does nothing, and if you drill down to where you'd find the log of the build attempt, on a timed out build it reports "This job is archived. Only the complete pipeline can be retried."19:28
sevanThis is something that's sat there for a month, hence I guess why it was archived.19:29
minutesevan: why not rerun the pipeline?19:31
sevanminute: how?19:32
minutesevan: do you have a link to the job?19:32
sevanminute: here's one https://source.mnt.re/sevan/reform/-/commit/bc596d3cf406efbf007f05eef590dc2b35ec973719:33
sevanminute: sorry, https://source.mnt.re/sevan/reform/-/pipelines/322119:33
sevanminute: there's a retry button on the top right, for me. but clicking it does nothing.19:34
sevanminute: another https://source.mnt.re/sevan/reform/-/pipelines/3225 19:36
minutesevan: indeed, retry seems broken, weird19:36
sevanminute: no worries, thanks for confirming. I thought I was missing something dead obvious.19:37
minutesevan: https://source.mnt.re/sevan/reform/-/pipelines/343619:37
minutei tried "New Pipeline" button 19:37
minuteand selected the branch19:38
minute(new pipeline button here https://source.mnt.re/sevan/reform/-/pipelines )19:38
sevanminute: <3 thank you for the help. I started a new pipeline for the other branch.19:40
joschsevan: also took me a while to learn these gitlab things -- you can always either rebase your commits or push new commits19:42
joschboth these things will also trigger a new pipeline19:42
minutesevan: no problem!19:44
sevanjosch: ah, that's good to know. :)19:44
joscheven without changes you can just "git commit --amend" your top commit to refresh it and then force push19:45
sevanjosch: so as long as there's a change of any form.19:46
sevanminute: is everything ok, on the CI side? (firmware built correctly and generated artifacts, it moves on to "Cleaning up project directory and file based variables" and "ERROR: Job failed: exit code 1")19:48
minutehuh weird19:49
minutesevan: i guess this line fails https://source.mnt.re/sevan/reform/-/jobs/7578#L365119:51

jfredHm, I wonder how the new tariffs will affect Reform Next purchases shipped to the US since the SoMs and a few other components are sourced from China. I suppose we'll likely have to pay import duty now when they ship?20:07
minutejfred: normally for customs the whole assembly counts, which is COO germany20:09
jfredoh, good20:09
jfredI was wondering about that20:09
minuteas long as ther's no tariffs on germany :320:09
jfredI reeeeeally hope not20:09
jfredwould it be different then if one were to order a SoM by itself? (though they'd likely fall under the $800 de minimis exception unless you were to order multiple at once)20:10
SarioI also hope not. I'm really looking forward to getting a Pocket and anything that adds to the cost will delay that 20:11
minutei think so far at least there's no obvious reason for the new US admin to make a trade war with germany... yet 20:14
- arminweigl (QUIT: Remote host closed the connection) (~arminweig@sourcehut/user/arminweigl)20:16
