ryukazouThere already a overlay content gentoo-kernel for classic reform10:13

gordon1inspected my balls today14:16
gordon1they are quite different14:16
gordon1(sorry, couldn't resist)14:16
gordon1I put silicon nitride and teflon ball in my microscope (old school, sorry, no pics), teflon ball showed very rough texture with ridges and troughs and craters on 10+ μm scale, however it definitely displayed translucence, not sure if that will be a problem with using it as a trackball ball. Silicon nitride showed surprising amount of texture for grade 5 ball, despite being perfectly smooth it14:17
gordon1definitely has some grain structure displaying different shades of gray, and besides that all fingerprints just light up which is probably responsible for god (or bad?) tracking and necessity to "wear in" for a day or so to properly work.14:17
gordon1I also tried to roll them on 2.5mm silicon nitride and teflon balls in a cup in addition to bearing balls, teflon ball on teflon balls surprisingly wasn't smooth, it created scraping effect, friction was quite high, similar but to a lesser extent was silicon nitride on silicon nitride and silicon nitride on stanless, teflon on stainless felt pretty much indistinguishable from POM, however14:17
gordon1teflon is a bit heavier so ball has a bit more inertia, but the absolute winner is silicon nitride on teflon creating smoothest feeling and least resistance.14:17
gordon1Another experiment i did is to try to free teflon balls after they has been glued in place, teflon doesn't really want to stick to anything so i rounded it with CA glue captive ring and then tried to flick it free with my finger, it worked somewhat and out of 6 balls i glued i was able to free 4, 1 fell off and one seized shut. Feel of the teflon balls that were freed with silicon nitride is14:17
gordon1quite similar to non-free balls but it rolls quite a bit further before it stops, all things considered i'm not sure that gluing and freeing teflon balls is worth the fuzz, however replacing stainless with teflon for silicon nitride main ball i feel is a must.14:17
gordon1it's a shame that there is little to no info about PAT9125 besides the datasheet and seems that there is no way to deduce what sensor "sees" to figure out if it is anything close in IR and with exposure it uses to what is observable under the microscope14:19
gordon1i also though of sprinkling the hot silicon nitride ball with phosphoric acid to create some surface texture but after i saw this grainy structure i think instead i will try to soak it in hot phosphoric acid overnight, i have a feeling that it will expose the grain better (similar to what happens with damascus steel blades)14:23

hramrachFor me the SiN ball feels much smoother than POM ball on steel bearings although the readings are not great. The POM ball is kind of stratchy which is not a problem with the ceramic balls.15:28

mhoyegordon1: thank you for your contributions to science17:14
mhoyeI'd really like to see what "dip hot silicon nitride in phosphoric acid" looks like (and how it performs!)17:15
mhoyeThis is the kind of UX extremophilia I am 100% here for.17:15
gordon1mhoye: oh no, i wanted to use spray bottle (atomizer) to sprinkle (cold) phosphoric acid on the ball that i heated up with a heat gun or a torch, it is less spectacular than what you described, looks like temperature when phosphpric acid etch the fastest is about 180°C, but i would probably reduce it to saner temperature so it wont evaporate and eat up my hotplate and leave it there longer17:23
gordon1or just chuck it for couple weeks17:25
gordon1that sounds the safest17:25
gordon1*chuck it in the cold one17:26
