grimmware | hramrach: that was me who did the thing with the accelerometers | 00:02 |
---|---|---|
hramrach | gordon1: yes, and from the discussion it seems that the IC is manufactured to do something like this, and then you find that you have a PSU that can do 2A at most and need to fit that curve to that restriction somehow | 00:03 |
gordon1 | oh, i got what you're saying, yeah i think it can just be achieved the way L29Ah said, at least that' my plan to achieve, but i am not aware of the combined PD + charger solutions, maybe some fancy integrated everything-in-one USB-C IC like they put in laptops nowdays can do that | 00:06 |
hramrach | L29Ah: you may need to be able to start charging while the EC is still off - if not then it's probably the best solution | 00:09 |
gordon1 | some i2c digital resistors have permanent memory, so EC can just write safe value there before dying | 00:10 |
gordon1 | so it will start to charge | 00:10 |
hramrach | grimmware: it's a cool lid switch :) | 00:12 |
hramrach | what is the state now, anyway. Last time I heard there was some attempt at making the protocol more generl but don't know how that went | 00:13 |
grimmware | I star | 00:15 |
grimmware | Ffs | 00:15 |
minute | hramrach: which pd charging discussion exactly? in pocket the current is digitally adjustable | 00:15 |
grimmware | I started looking in to it but I didn’t really spend much time on it | 00:15 |
minute | hramrach: just on reform classic with the ltc4020 that's not possible, as it is a very analog chip and has a limiting resistor. | 00:16 |
hramrach | not sure exactly, there are always some charging problems, some suppliyes not sypplying wenough power to raise teh machine from full discharge, it's like a never ending story | 00:16 |
minute | hramrach: i think that is kind of a nihilistic view that ignores all the nuance/progress that has been made | 00:17 |
hramrach | and that many of the problem reports are users of old firmware, too | 00:17 |
minute | yes. people will need to upgrade soon | 00:17 |
hramrach | I kind of do not care, my PD PSU does provide 100W output, and can bring the big reform from 0 | 00:18 |
minute | i tagged a release today and we're shipping that with the rk3588 pocket reform diy kits that are going out next week | 00:18 |
hramrach | but it does mean I need to keep around the big PSU when travelling in case my battery charge ever gets low because smaller PSUs may not work, even with the Pocket there eare problems | 00:19 |
minute | hramrach: is that a real problem? | 00:20 |
minute | hramrach: i mean, with the latest fw and all? | 00:20 |
hramrach | There are some complaints on the forum, likely not all with the latest firmware | 00:21 |
hramrach | and yes, some PSUs are just too bad as well. just found that a USB PD 'phone charger' will disconnect the device when the power draw is *too low* | 00:22 |

BoostisBetter | hramrach: ch also has a sysctrl firmware that works with MUCH more PD chargers. So far all of the ones that I have in the house. The downside is that you then loose host mode on that port. SO you can only use it for PD charging. That is fine for me, as I don't really plug anything into the Pocket. However, that firmware is working really well it would seem. | 09:01 |

gordon1 | so what are you thoughts? will that work? https://litter.catbox.moe/x23nfy.png https://litter.catbox.moe/hbfccg.png screws replaced by 3x1 or 3x2 magnets, but i had to make top lid thicker, maybe 2.5mm or so instead of 1, will it interfere with trackball buttons? | 11:32 |
josch | gordon1: are those hinges in the back? As in: is it supposed to be opened like a box lid? That might actually interfere with the case itself at the location where the lid hinges are. | 11:35 |
gordon1 | correct, i have a feeling that you don't need to open it all the way, just 70° or so to pull the ball out | 11:36 |

gordon1 | so there is a cutout in pcb around 30x30mm and my hinge thing is smaller that it (28x28mm), and when it opens it might be slightly more, i might have to make a little cutout in the round rim of a lid at the front | 11:46 |
gordon1 | maybe like that? https://litter.catbox.moe/upnppv.png | 11:48 |
gordon1 | i mean it's ugly af, can be done better | 11:49 |
josch | yes, like that it would be able to open a bit more but at least to me it still looks either very, very tight or just not possible | 11:51 |
josch | gordon1: you have a reform, yes? | 11:51 |
gordon1 | not yet | 11:52 |
gordon1 | but hopefully i'll get my reform in few months | 11:52 |

gordon1 | there is, okay i see your point now | 13:44 |
gordon1 | has to be something like this https://litter.catbox.moe/8r5dv2.png | 13:49 |

josch | gordon1: i'd offer to print this and test it out but this looks super challenging for a normal fdm printer because you cannot print the cup upside-down anymore as there is now two "hinges" sticking out | 13:59 |
gordon1 | i'm printing it on prusa mk3 and previous one worked fine, trick is to print it hollow side up with bunch of supports | 14:00 |
josch | sure, more supports make most things work :) | 14:00 |
josch | i like the idea of replacing the screws with magnets but maybe the hinge is overcomplicating it | 14:01 |
gordon1 | it is definitely how it is printed for production trackballs, you can see it on the website https://shop.mntre.com/spree/products/435/large/P1030517-edit.jpg?1712762259 | 14:01 |
gordon1 | josch: i designed it to have a 1mm stainless pin there, so that might be an issue, but probably fine to test w/o it | 14:03 |
gordon1 | what is the trackball pcb's thickness? 1.6? | 14:59 |

BoostisBetter | minute: I know it is the weekend, but I am wondering if you have had a minute (no pun intended) to check my logs? DO you have an idea of what the problem could be? | 17:31 |

minute | BoostisBetter: next week | 17:40 |
minute | BoostisBetter: i already looked at them and i couldn't see anything except that the keyboard stops working on usb | 17:41 |
minute | BoostisBetter: no idea yet why though. lets see if it goes away when we ship you your rk3588 upgrade | 17:41 |
minute | (iirc you ordered one) | 17:42 |
gordon1 | BoostisBetter: did you check if the usb cable physically in fine condition? | 17:44 |
gordon1 | just in case | 17:44 |

BoostisBetter | minute: yes I ordered the upgrade kit with the wifi package as well. | 17:59 |
BoostisBetter | gordon1 that isn't a bad idea. Just to make sure I didn't pull it out some or somethning when I was moving the wifi antenna | 17:59 |
BoostisBetter | ALthough I kind of doubt it. Because it goes away with a hard power over and on | 18:00 |
BoostisBetter | If the cable was bad or something like that then the togglging of power wouldn | 18:00 |
BoostisBetter | 't change any of that. | 18:00 |
gordon1 | BoostisBetter: the cable can just have a intermittent connect, just take a multimeter (hopefully you have one) and check the continuity over all four wires while cable is disconnected, that will give you some idea, there is a little metal tab on a side that you can use to poke your probe into https://litter.catbox.moe/116mst.jpg wiggle the cable a bit to check if the contact is solid | 18:07 |
+ cow321 (~deflated8@user/meow/deflated8837) | 18:07 | |
BoostisBetter | gordon1: thanks, if it continues, I'll get to the point where I do that. Just now I just made sure that the cables were firmly in. | 18:13 |
BoostisBetter | minute: did your latest kb firmware have an auto timeout on the kb backlights? | 18:13 |
BoostisBetter | minute: I seriously wonder if messing with the leds is the source of the issue. | 18:14 |
BoostisBetter | Anyone think KDE would work on the Pocket? | 18:28 |
gordon1 | i don't see the reason why it shouldn't | 18:28 |
BoostisBetter | is the way to install it simply doing an apt install kde? | 18:29 |
josch | BoostisBetter: kde-standard or, if you'd like to have everything: kde-full | 18:32 |
josch | for kde plasma, install kde-plasma-desktop | 18:32 |
josch | or, if you'd like to have the selection that debian-installer would install: task-kde-desktop | 18:32 |
josch | (all of these rely heavily on recommends) | 18:32 |
- murph_nj (QUIT: Remote host closed the connection) (~murph@pool-108-35-93-154.nwrknj.fios.verizon.net) | 18:33 | |
BoostisBetter | I did a kde-full | 18:33 |
BoostisBetter | I have the room, hahaha | 18:33 |
josch | this is not only about the room | 18:41 |
josch | kde-full will also install kde-plasma-desktop which in turn installs sddm the login manager | 18:42 |
josch | so there might be a new service that starts on bootup | 18:42 |
josch | kde-plasma-desktop also Recommends xserver-xorg which you don't want | 18:42 |
BoostisBetter | josch: soi maybe I should just go right back and uninstall it | 18:45 |
BoostisBetter | I really don't want to mess with the greeter | 18:45 |
BoostisBetter | doing that had the thing install SOOO many packages though. So many | 18:45 |
minute | BoostisBetter: you mean changing the led brightness causes trouble? | 18:47 |
BoostisBetter | yeah. Before any of that, I don't remember the keyboard ever having problems. Maybe it just causes a desync or something on the uart line? | 18:50 |
BoostisBetter | No idea, just speculating. | 18:50 |
minute | BoostisBetter: interesting. maybe because of power fluctuations. | 18:55 |
josch | BoostisBetter: uninstallation will not get you exactly the state back you had before | 19:05 |
josch | before installing gigabytes of packages it is usually a good idea to take a snapshot of your system | 19:06 |
josch | packages are more than just some data, they also come with configuration and services | 19:06 |
+ bkeys (~Thunderbi@173.16.175.75) | 19:07 | |
BoostisBetter | yeah I see that now. Restarting saw a bunch of new stuff, and there is no greeterd anymore. It logs in like how the Classic Reform did. | 19:08 |
josch | okay, good | 19:08 |
BoostisBetter | I could start sway of course, so the thing isn't broken or anything, just install kde-full dorked some things up. | 19:08 |
BoostisBetter | minute: due to the size of the pocket, and the way one would use it, I think if there is going to be a pocket mainboard 2 that it would be good to breakout the ports like on the next. I worry about wearing out the USB C PD port on the Pocket. | 19:16 |

josch | L29Ah: if you have one of the newer SoMs, you will have a bad experience with Xorg. It seems that graphics driver authors in mesa do not really target Xorg compatibility anymore... (something that other people in this channel have said -- this info is not first hand) | 23:00 |
