jfredAs someone with a qcm6490 phone, I'm keeping a close eye on mobile linux support... would love to switch back to a mobile linux distro someday and dock it as a desktop15:15
jfredubuntu touch back in the day had shockingly good battery life but I think it was relying on some android power management components for that (plus it made liberal use of SIGSTOP)15:16
TwodisbetterI still wish the official Ubuntu phone would have happened. 15:42

ericsfragaYou had to boot up in Android to have a proper phone. Still, it's good in that it has a decent keyboard.16:13
jfredHeh, I have a Gemini sitting on my desk too. Great form factor, but their Linux support always seemed highly vendor-specific16:17
jfredthe Gemini feels like a perfect device for a phone-focused sway config though (e.g. sxmo)16:19
gsorathe main issue with gemini iirc was the mediatek soc no?16:19
jfredyeah, that's my impression16:20
jfredoh speaking of mobile Linux, I should go put that LTE modem in my Pocket Reform later today now that I have the back panel I'll be using long-term installed16:22
TwodisbetterI ordered a Cosmo from Planet Computer 2 years ago, radio silience there. Pretty sure I'll never get the phone. But of all the phones I could want, anything that follows after the N900 that I still have, would be excellenece. 16:23

SavagePeanutHello, I'm yet another enthusatic person who doesn't know anything about schematics but wants to contribute :)18:48
SavagePeanutSpecifically DP alt mode with the pocket and rk3588. I've found a few things and want to know if I'm on the right trackish18:48
SavagePeanuthttps://www.allaboutcircuits.com/technical-articles/introduction-to-usb-type-c-which-pins-power-delivery-data-transfer/18:48
SavagePeanuthttps://www.ti.com/lit/wp/slly021/slly021.pdf18:48
SavagePeanutThis looks like another project with the rk3588 that does support DP alt mode, I might be able to use it as guidence?18:48
SavagePeanuthttps://wiki.cool-pi.com/en/home/cm5_evb18:49
SavagePeanutfile:///home/peanut/Downloads/cm5_evb_v11.pdf18:49
SavagePeanutI have the pocket and rk3588 module schematics cloned and open in kicad. Trying to learn how to use it...18:49
SavagePeanutOh shoot, did that all get sent as separate messages?18:51
minuteSavagePeanut: yep! ^^18:51
SavagePeanutMy bad 😅18:51
SavagePeanutAnd looks like I linked the downloaded pdf, and not the actual link. https://wiki.cool-pi.com/en/cm5/cm5_evb_v11.pdf18:52
hramrachThat rk3588 supports it does not mean you have the pins available. That's the most common struggle with devices not built as evaluation board: the pins not used in the original design cannot be used most of the time.18:53
SavagePeanutIt _looks_ like the pocket mainboard has the pins available but they are not connected to anything yet18:54
SavagePeanutBut again I am new :)18:54
SavagePeanutI have to stop being in the habit of multi lining my messages with this.18:55

minutests-q: what's the bug? is it a critical one?20:53
sts-qi dont know. apt upgade thinks it is critical as it ask me if i what to break or continue.20:55
sts-qi did not continue the upgrade, thats why apt still has 116 packages to do.20:56
sts-qSo my question would be upgrade anyway?20:57
hramrachit also offers the option to review the bug report20:57
hramrachthis is unstable so such things are common20:58
hramrachit would be nice if we could use at least testing but apparently so many components are cutting adge that it would cause different sorts of problems20:58
minutests-q: my recommendation is to look at the details of the bug and see if it would affect you20:59
sts-qyes, i understand that. So i should just let apt let go on?20:59

joschminute: hi, i just came back from work -- i'll come back to you in a bit :)21:14
minutejosch: ohh ok no problem! i just read all the code again and remembered you'll have to bump the uboot tag etc in the machines/*.conf in reform-tools and make a release21:17
minutejosch: in any case, rk3588 uboot is ready and tagged21:18
minuteso i'll leave you to it and make feierabend21:18
joschhramrach: in the past we had to patch much more stuff -- these days, i think you will not find many problems if you were to switch from unstable to testing. The remaining problems will occur in the times where unstable and testing have a different glibc version which will clash with, for example the kernel builds which are targetting unstable21:23
joschnice, the rk3588 u-boot build seems to be bit-by-bit reproducible as expected21:27
- bkeys (QUIT: Read error: Connection reset by peer) (~Thunderbi@173.16.175.75)21:27
joschokay, lets make a reform-tools release and then run reform-debian-packages...21:28
hramrachAll the Wayland stuff is basically alpha quality, the newer the better most of the time. The setup wizard needed adding some libraries to Debian IIRC, and the list goes on. It is typically not difficult to rebuild current kernel and u-boot even for stable but the need to patch userspace brings in dependency hell.21:29
+ bkeys (~Thunderbi@173.16.175.75)21:29
hramrachright, current kicad is needed top open schematics, too.21:30
joschhramrach: the setup wizard is not a problem. Yes, more stuff was needed but the resulting binary is statically linked (because rust) and thus should work on testing21:30
hramrachmy aim is not to have one-off hack of downgrading to testing, rather having the option to build testing images21:33
joschhramrach: you can do that, there are variables you can set to change the distro21:33
joschfor both the repository and the image21:33
joschi'm using that for debian stable21:34
hramrachI guess I should try sometime then21:34
hramrachdust off some Arm board'21:35
joschhramrach: the reform-debian-packages repo will automatically cross-compile things if you are on a platform other than arm6421:35
hramrachI wonder if my Atom server is more powerful than Arm boards21:36

joschminute: reform-tools 1.54 is released and reform-debian-packages pipeline is running21:42
joschminute: one remaining possible issue is the bootargs for rk3588 -- is any special/custom option needed for those boards? I looked through the u-boot binary and it does not seem to set the ${bootargs} environment variable, so not even bits like console=... get set21:44
joschfor other boards, the u-boot config sets CONFIG_BOOTARGS but i don't see the setting in the defconfigs in the reform-rk3588-uboot repo21:46
