midfavil1hey, all. uhhhhhhh weird situation here and i wanna know if it sounds like a ship-it-back sort of issue01:03
- gsora (QUIT: Ping timeout: 252 seconds) (~gsora@user/gsora)01:03
midfavil1sitting here watching a show, charging my refor, and all of a sudden it just died01:03
midfavil1reform, even, phonefingers01:03
midfavil1anyway there's a very pungent ozone-y smell coming from the batteries and some of the circuitry near the barrel jack01:04
midfavil1and it won't turn back on. i assume it's some kind of short?01:04
midfavil1i still get the red power LED while it's plugged in01:05
midfavil1minute: any professional opinion?01:06
midfavil1oh, and i suppose its important to mention that nothing seemed abnormally hot01:07

midfavil1yeah, i tried running off AC alone, nothing01:35
midfavil1and i mean it's not a huge deal i still have my old one to use until the reform gets figured out01:36
midfavil1goes without saying though that i'd rather the reform01:37

joschminute, ch: for uploading reform-tools to Debian main, I need to remove the non-free parts from it. What do you think about replacing MNTIcons.ttf with a tiny font i just created which has the Debian swirl as the letter "M" and can thus act as a drop-in replacement?08:29

_hramrachuh, in what way is MNTIcons.ttf non-free?10:39
_hramrachI see, CC-BY-NC-4.0 for the font10:46
_hramrachI wonder if that NC adds any value10:47
_hramrachAlso I wonder if it would classify as non-free even if relesead under more permissive license given the logo is likely a trademark10:48
chjosch, minute: the font is used for the logo in sway? if so i think we should find a way to preserve the branding there. maybe as _hramrach mentioned the font can become "free" even if the logo cannot be changed (like firefox etc)11:01
_hramrachIIRC with firefox it's the other way around: You can change the logo but you cannot use it for anything besides firefox (and special licence was needed to use it for Debian firefox builds).11:06
chi doubt that debian has a special license, thats very un-dfsg11:10
- mjw (QUIT: Ping timeout: 260 seconds) (~mjw@vpn-konference.ms.mff.cuni.cz)11:10
joschch, _hramrach: details to firefox branding: https://lwn.net/Articles/676799/11:48
joschfor more details see https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=81500611:48
joschthe issue was also copyright related but mainly a trademark thing where firefox didn't permit modified versions to be called "firefox" via its trademark on the name11:49
joschminute, ch: another solution could be to just not let the reform-tools package ship /usr/share/fonts/truetype/MNTIcons.ttf (nothing in the reform-tools package makes use of it) but instead ship the font as part of the reform-system-image scripts and put it in /opt or something11:52
joschthe things that uses it is the waybar config in reform-system-image11:53
chslightly better option: put it into an mnt-branding package which wont exist in debian 11:55
chdoesnt the handbook have the same problem then?11:56
joschch: according to lukas, the handbook is CC-BY-SA-4.011:57
chhttps://mntre.com/documentation/reform-handbook/_static/logo.svg i have my doubts11:58
chanyway, if its fine for the handbook, a solution for the font should also be possible11:59
ch(without putting it into a new package)11:59

joschryukazou: it can take a while because the team is very small and everybody is overworked -- if you ping lukas here, you are likely to get a quick reply16:12

minutejosch: ah, i wanted to ask if nc would be ok for debian? that would be an easy solution for the logo17:31
minutejosch: otherwise replacing with debian logo is fine, but we need to use mnt logo variant on our own CI17:31
joschminute: nope, non-commercial is non-free for debian17:31
joschminute: and if the logo is nc, what about the logo in the handbook?17:32
minutejosch: ok, so the logo in the handbook could be replaced with just a text headline "MNT Reform"17:33
joschch: you think creating a "mnt-branding" package would be better? I think using a package makes sense for things that needs to be updated but is that the case for static pixel or raster graphics?17:43
chjosch: i think a package always makes sense, be it for keeping track of where files come from and/or updating. and i'm guessing it won't be the last file18:10

joschhrm... seems like the MNT logo is hidden in quite a few more places... the sway screenshots have it (in waybar), svgs have it (4-keyboard-v3-special-keys.svg)...18:15
joschthere is a bit of clean-up to do...18:15
chmaybe the handbook wants to be in non-free 18:27
