joschminute: we just installed a new imx8mq reform with the reform-setup-wizard and have some feedback11:42
joschafter the wizard finishes you are immediately dumped into sway11:42
joschbut shouldn't a terminal open with this small text about keyboard shortcuts?11:42
joschas it is right now, you get dumped into sway and don't even know how to open a terminal with super+enter11:42
joschsecond issue: after opening a terminal and running sudo the message appears "unable to resolve host ${hostname}: temporary failure in name resolution"11:44
joschmaybe the reform-setup-wizard is not immidiately applying the chosen hostname?11:44
chsounds like /etc/hosts didnt get updated?11:46

joschyes11:56
joschsorry, i'm just abusing irc for quick notes that should technically go into an issie on source.mnt.re instead11:57
joschgood news is:11:57
joschwe just went through a whole installation starting from a fresh sd-card11:57
joschthrough the reform-setup-wizard11:57
joschand then using reform-setup-encrypted-nvme11:57
joschand everything worked without an error11:58
joschthis relieves me quite a bit because if you receive no bug reports you never know if that is because there are no bugs (haha) or because nobody uses or reports them XD11:58

minutejosch: this channel is very good for dropping these kind of notes ^^16:11
joschokay :) So the main blockers were, that after the setup wizard you get dropped into sway and nothing tells you basic things like how to open a shell. This information is already written up in /etc/reform-desktop-help and should probably somehow get displayed to the user?16:14
joschThe remaining issues were from the fact that the reform was very old (pre sysimage-v3) and still had u-boot without display support and emmc had one big partition instead of two. So we had to first get eMMC into a more modern state.16:15
minutejosch: hmm normally you should get thrown into tuigreet16:15
joschWe also ran reform-setup-encrypted-nvme which might be something that could be done by the setup-wizard as well.16:16
joschyes, but after tuigreet you get an empty desktoop16:16
minutejosch: the issue is that this help terminal has many UX issues, especially on pocket reform16:16
minutejosch: i.e. one doesn't know that you can scroll up16:17
joschyes, i'm not sure what the perfect solution would be16:17
minute(there's no scrollbar in foot)16:17
joschi was just reporting the main impression from a first-time user16:17
minuteright now you can click on the 3 dots and Help (i think)16:17
joschOh then we missed the help button16:17
minuteyeah, interesting for sure, and we need to do a better job there16:17
joschthe three dots are clickable! :D16:18
joschwe didn't get that far :)16:18
minuteyup :316:18
joschin any case, debacle offered to do future experiments for me on his imx8mq reform16:18
joschso i'm now happy to have some volunteer for future kernel version bumps16:19
joschanybody upgraded their reform to kernel 6.8.9 yet?16:19
minutejosch: nice16:19
joschit *should* all work correctly if i set up the meta-meta-package correctly16:19
minutei just had a 4 hour phone meeting and my brain is mashed potatoes16:19
joschoh noes XD16:19
joschi'm sitting in a train back home -- my brain is also steaming from very exciting discussions i had today :)16:20
joschi talked with ben hutchings about a standard interface for downstream consumers of the kernel16:20
joschto make it more easy for parties like MNT to have their patch stack get applied on top of vanilla Debian kernel packaging16:21
joschaccording to Ben, most people just do their own thing and it would be nice if there was a standard solution to the problem16:21
joschi'm now eager to see how the transition of flavour name works out in the wild16:22
joschi hope nothing breaks16:22
joschfingers crossed...16:22
minutejosch: that would be cool @ std interface16:40
joschlinux 6.8.9 is now in the mnt repos: https://mntre.com/reform-debian-repo/pool/main/l/linux/17:19
joschif somebody could run "apt upgrade" and make sure that this really installs a new meta-package called linux-image-mnt-reform-arm64 that would help! :)17:20
joschand of course that "uname -a" reports that you are now really running on 6.8.9 after a reboot :)17:20
joschso whoever feels adventerous and wants to help testing, i'm looking forward to your feedback17:20

minutejosch: i will try it now19:51
minuteheh, oldest kernel on this machine is 5.17.0-reform2-arm6419:56
minutemy home folder on my reform is from june 7, 202019:58
minutelooks like it did the right thing:20:01
minutelrwxrwxrwx 1 root  root        59 May 20 19:56 dtb -> dtbs/6.8.9-mnt-reform-arm64/rockchip/rk3588-mnt-reform2.dtb20:01
joschthat looks good!20:02
+ gustav28 (~gustav@c-f936524e.019-141-67626730.bbcust.telenor.se)20:02
joschthis likely means that you have the meta-meta-package called linux-image-arm64 installed as well as the new meta-package called linux-image-mnt-reform-arm64 which then in turn depends on the real kernel package linux-image-6.8.9-mnt-reform-arm6420:03
minuteok, copied over the kernel, dtb and initrd to my sd card (which is the real boot medium) and edited my extlinux.conf to match20:05
minute(i'm still booting via a hack with vendor uboot)20:05
minuteaaand will reboot... :020:06
joschoh no XD20:06
minuteso far so good!20:08
minuteaha, cpu freqs are there now without explicitly having to load the module20:09
minutepanthor is also there20:09
minutedisplay worked + luckily usb in initramfs too ;)20:09
minute(so i could unlock the encrypted nvme)20:09
minutemonitor brightness control is gone!20:10
minutelucky that the default seems to be full brightness in this case20:10
minutewifi + sound work20:11
minute(wifi is via pcie)20:11
minutelol there is no pwm backlight in the dts for some reason20:13
joschoh no i totally didn't think that when you say "i try this on my reform" then you mean "i try this on rk3588" -- it really boots??? \o/20:13
minutejosch: yeah, typing this on the rk3588!20:13
minuteit's my laptop after all :D20:13
sigridship it20:13
minutesigrid: trying!!20:13
minutetoday i did one last minute addition to the module, which i almost forgot... but then remembered on the weekend20:14
minutewhich is: a pcie clock fanout buffer is needed20:14
minutebecause rk3588 needs one more refclk for the second pair of pcie lanes of the second controller. so that with next and future reform motherboards one can driver 4-lane ssd20:14
minutes/driver/drive20:14
minuteso i put that in today, will sleep over it and double check tomorrow and order new release candidate pcbs20:15
joschwow!20:19

sigridthat's good news20:31
sigridyou mentioned extra sai lines and other extra ports(?), are these going to be available on the older mnt reform boards to hook into?20:32
sigridI did not necessarily understand what this entails20:32
minutesigrid: second sai not, that's only for pocket reform (for the modem), but the extra port yeah, it's a flat cable connector that has some extra signals on it. the main use case is to connect future little boards with wifi/bt chipsets on them20:33
sigridthat's great. I wonder if I can hook an esp32-s3 there20:34
minuteif you don't/can't use pcie for that. in classic reform that isn't really necessary because you have mpcie for wifi20:34
minutesigrid: i think you should be able to. the signals are usb2, sdio and uart20:34
minute(+ power)20:34
minuteone could also use reforms mpcie slot with a custom mpcie shaped card that only accepts power from the motherboard, and those signals from that fpc connector, and put whatever on it20:35
sigridi thought of adding bluetooth support to 9front this way20:36
minutenice20:36
sigridas esp32 then can just provide a fs 9p interface to the host20:37

vkoskivI think full-size SD cards do exist that do a similar thing. Not sure of the specifics tho21:26
