ndufresneIn case no one notice, in future (or futuristic?), there is SBC by Radxa announced to host a MediaTek Genio 1200, I have a Chromebook that host a very similar soc, the MT8195, extremely powerful, and they share a lot of HW, meaning path to upstreaming isnt too large00:18
minutendufresne: interesting, cpus look almost identical to rk3588 but smaller gpu?00:44
minuteah wrong, mt8195 has a78, rk3588 a7600:48
ndufresneIt on level up, the GPU is older but mc5 instead of 401:03
ndufresneUndocumented, but the Chromebook seems to have a boost frequency of 3ghz01:03
swivelminute: when do you expect to have imx8 reforms available again?01:04
ndufresneMy impression is that imx8 is completely outperformed by other solutions out there, why do you want this?01:05
swivelmy impression is that the imx8 has mature/stable driver support... esp. since it's the same as the librem uses01:07
swivelrelatively comprehensive hw enablement with a minimum of binary blobs, unlike the rpi cm4 aiui01:07
swivelmy main complaint wrt imx8 is limited ram01:08
ndufresneFo01:10
ndufresneSorry, just hit the keyboard by accident 01:11
ndufresneThe imx8m cpu and GPU are relatively slow, combined with low ram, plus the lack of iommu for the GPU and codecs can lead to fragmentation issues01:12
ndufresneStability of A311D might not be on par, that I'm pretty sure01:13
swivelmy use case doesn't really care all that much about gpu performance, i care more about mostly mainline and lack of proprietary garbage01:14
ndufresneIirc, only CODECs needs blobs though, it is well supported upstream, and even the AI chip now have an open source stack01:14
swivelit'll mostly be a device for connecting to embedded shit via serial consoles and programming in vim in a tiling wm01:15
ndufresneI see, and stm32mp1 would even be enough 01:15
ndufresne(would be good for battery life)01:16
swivelwell since im also interested in the librem5 and developing stuff for it, it'd prolly be convenient to have a similar SoC in one of my dev laptops01:28

minuteswivel: we are not planning to bring back imx8m, but it you are serious about wanting to buy a reform with it, please write to support@mntre.com and we'll see what we can do01:56
jfredHas anyone tried running hyprland on an a311d reform? Curious how all the eye candy would perform01:58
swivelminute: will do.  I would have bought one earlier in the crowdfunding phase or something, but i haven't been in a financial position to do such things for a while now02:03
swivelbut i should be able to start buying such things within a month or so...02:04

joschswivel: the reform with imx8mq was my only laptop for over a year and i did all my debian-related packaging, maintenance and programming on it plus all the other stuff like web, email, video etc. The imx8mq definitely makes for a usable computer!06:43

minuteswivel: sorry, i forgot last night that i think crowd supply still has mnt reform imx8mq stock.18:11
minuteswivel: at least the DIY kit that is listed in stock there (the assembled ones have kind of weird dates there) https://www.crowdsupply.com/mnt/reform#products18:13
minutei'm gonna check the stock info csv that i'm getting once in a while18:13
minutebizarrely, the stock data that i have says they have 19 (!) assembled reforms with imx8mq in stock18:15
minuteand 14 diy kits18:15
swivelsweet!18:19
swivelminute: so would one i get from crowdsupply have the original style keyboard layout in terms of little space bar keys?  I noticed elektron's replacement keyboard had wider space bar caps18:23
minuteswivel: i believe they should have the new one by now but i can't say for sure18:25
swiveli see... is it the same situation WRT the battery boards? may be old vs. newer protection ones?18:26
minutei think on the assembled ones there is a greater chance that you'll get the newest HW18:29
minute(the version with trackpad is not actually in stock and never will be though, i wrote them about it now)18:29
minute(that it should actually be removed)18:29
swivelcool, thanks for the transparency / responsiveness on such things... it matters, I look forward to sending some resources your way18:33
minuteCS will soon offer the a311d version of reform and also rcm4 upgrades18:34
swivelis it preferable on your end to receive direct orders vs. CS? 18:34
minuteswivel: at the moment direct orders are preferable ^^18:35
swivelkk, when I'm ready to spend I'll ping you again to see what's the best route ... I do want an imx8 at least, but could end up ordering several variants, we'll see.  I might try convince others at work to leave reforms on their desks as a console they'll be tempted to tinker with18:37
swivelshould be able to at least order the imx8 one for me before end of month18:41
