digitalraynejosch: i had the same feeling about the 100mb limitation on the current test rk3388 module, who could ever need more than 100mb :P00:12

joschminute: since the collabora rk3588 branch is based on v6.8-rc1 you are probably waiting until the Debian linux packaging team packaged 6.8 for unstable or experimental?00:45

joschit's "just" 76 commits on top of that :)00:46
joscha lot of those can be thrown out because they only add documentation or device trees we are not interested in00:47

minutejosch: yes, sounds about right00:52
minutejosch: thanks for taking a look!00:52
joschdebian unstable is a mess still, so it's understandable that the kernel team is currently busy putting out fires elsewhere instead of packaging 6.8~rc6 unfortunately :/00:53

vagrantcso is the rk3588 module a complete replacement for the imx8mq module, or does it use an adapter board of some kind?01:20
minutejosch: this was already fixed01:20
minutevagrantc: hmm i can't follow. it's an adapter similar to rcm4, but for the icore 3588q01:21
vagrantcminute: so there's an adapter board and a separte module with the rk3588?01:22
vagrantcand you're building the adapter board, not the cpu module?01:22
vagrantcat any rate, really exciting to read about the progress with it!01:22
minutevagrantc: correct, the module is from t-firefly01:28

joschminute: the debian-image-recipes repo you linked to yesterday made me aware of the software bmaptool which is like dd but makes use of a *.bmap file to only copy those blocks that contain actual data. I have a MR which creates these bmap files. I'm unsure whether offering these files in addition to the existing files adds confusion or would be something useful to have.10:15
joschi never used bmaptool before but it is written by a person whose expertise i value very highly so i wanted to give it a try10:16

joschminute: okay, so the pipeline for MR 89 succeeded and according to the bmap file and given the current image size, it's possible to flash an sd-card by only writing 63.3% of the image size. I have yet to see whether an image flashed with "bmaptool copy" works or not and will update the MR once I get to do that.16:34
hramrachthe paste latency .. that's a common problem not specific to Reform for sure. A clipboard manager such as parcellite might help. Since it' happens once in a blue moon it's difficult to set up any kind of debugging that would uncover wehre the time is spent. There is generally the problem that the application from which you copy 'owns' the clipboard and must be running and responsive, and16:42
hramrachclipboard manger can help in that it takes ownership of the clipboard instead. There may be other problems, however.16:42
swivells/1016:46
hramrachjosch: using bmaptool might also have a downside: data remaining on the medium that is no longer wanted16:48
hramrachAre there any nice modules with the schnappsdragons? It seems that they are recently popular with notebook manufacturers so they will likely have decent kernel support, including sleep.16:51
minutei have a qcs6490 dev board from thundercomm now. but focussing on shipping rk3588 first because it's going well16:53

hramrachso there is one, unsuprisingly. Thanks17:07
hramrachObviously it's not possible to support every SoM, and it's an open question what this particular one would bring that would make it worth considering.17:08
minutehramrach: i can answer your question. this is the same soc that is in the fairphone 5 and it is getting a lot of support work by linaro and will potentially work well with mainline 17:33
minuteand will be supported for a longer time17:33
minutemoreover, it has an adreno gpu that has very good mesa support, afaik with opengl 4.6 and vulkan 1.3 as you can see here (freedreno/turnip). https://mesamatrix.net/ 17:35
joschhramrach: thanks a lot for your suggestions re clipboard manager. I've never used one so I'll check out parcellite. Since you confirmed that the application from which you copy "owns" the pasted content and must be responsive, i think it's very likely that when it happens, the application was just swapped out and some seconds are needed to retrieve the data.17:43
joschhramrach: the downside of bmaptool you mention is also an important part to consider. I'm still pondering about what the right trade-off is and did not come to a satisfying conclusion for myself yet. What I like about bmaptool is, that if one doesn't like it, one can still dd as usual and ignore the bmap file.17:44
joschwait... the qcs6490 is in the fairphone 5? drats and here i was semi-celebrating that finally my laptop will be faster than the smartphone of the other person in the house ;)17:46
joschoh... for a clipboard manager to also manage the primary selection, it seems that it's necessary to regularly poll for the current selection in an infinite loop... hrm...18:02

joschit was just so cool when i was still using the imx8mq and i had linux compiling with -j4 and at the same time i was watching 1080p video18:32
minutejosch: i think you can do that with -j8 on the rk3588 ^^ 18:36

joschdon't tempt me!! ;)19:02
joschon a more serious note, imx8mq had quirks and so does a311d. Personally, I see less downsides for the a311d compared to imx8mq overall for the stuff i do, so that was a really good upgrade. The one thing that a SoM can tempt me with, I think, would be support for suspend-to-ram.19:26
josch(and not the imx8mq suspend-to-ram which would only reduce power consumption by half)19:27
hramrachyes, I guess good upstream support done by somebody else because it's used in other devices is appealing on its own, that's why I thought of those CPUs in the first place 19:51
joschthat was one of the advantages of imx8mq as well, if i remember correctly, as that is used by the purism librem 520:00

minutejosch: can't wait to try it, unfortunately i don't have the details in my head now, but you need all the new modules of that stack and basically all rockchip related modules21:54
joschthe new config options of the stack just seem to be PHY_ROCKCHIP_SAMSUNG_HDPTX, VIDEO_SYNOPSYS_HDMIRX, PHY_ROCKCHIP_USBDP, ROCKCHIP_REGULATOR_COUPLER, ARM_ROCKCHIP_CPUFREQ, DRM_PANTHOR22:04
joschaha, i found the config used for linux-image-6.8.0-rc1-g60c00a5eccfb_6.8.0-rc1-g60c00a5eccfb-1_arm64.deb22:07

joschmaybe somebody sees some other useful options in the diff here: https://mister-muffin.de/p/i0NW.txt22:15
