joschi've been doing gnu hurd stuff for a few months now on and off00:50
joschand now it hit me: this is like literally (for me) the only reason for x86 on the reform :D00:50

digitalrayneminute: i started working on an ethernet bmc module for rack reform, i figured the easiest way to share this idea with you would be to do it in kicad: https://source.mnt.re/rayne/rack-reform/-/tree/rayne-rack-bmc/bmc-control?ref_type=heads02:56
digitalrayneso the idea would be the lpc micro has ethernet, and access via uart to syscon and SoM uarts, so can control power etc via lpc over ipmi or a telnet interface, and forward a serial console over telnet or ipmi02:57
digitalraynei haven't finished the routing of the pcb yet but the schematic should be fairly well annotated and i've done initial component placement02:58

minutedigitalrayne: oh that's cool! what's the controller chip? (can't see on phone rn)12:24
digitalrayneminute: it's an nxp lpc1769x with a lan8720 eth phy, so it needs firmware written, but would be very similar to the existing lpc controller12:26

minutedigitalrayne: thx. do you have a plan for ssh? i'm not sure if you're aware that i was looking into a bmc solution before. my line of thinking was that i would like the bmc to be an ssh server, so it makes sense to use something that has a tested/somewhat secure ssh server, like bsd or linux. so i was looking at small solutions that could run an OS like that12:57

hramrachon the one hand running BSD or Linux sounds like overkill, on the other hand many BMCs were made to run Linux after the fact so the required power for the BMC is probably enough17:03

joschminute: if you are into that kind of solution, a more long-term stable approach would be a Debian chroot that is old enough for blender 2.79 -- want me to set something up or do you consider your work a one-time hack?18:02

digitalrayneminute: was not aware you were looking into bmc solutions, i think ssh makes a lot of sense. i also thought building something around an ast2500 or similar would be cool but _much_ more complex21:31
digitalrayneast2500 have their own pcie "graphics card" for providing video signal to the bmc which seemed like a bit of an issue given on the reform board 1x pcie would likely already be used on nvme and the other is good to have for expansion21:37
