hramrachso when using with something that does not have a sim slot I would need and adapter that has one00:08

jfredFinally got an SD card running a resized and upgraded copy of the system v4 image on a311d. I think my last attempt failed because I hadn't resized the rootfs and ran out of space mid-upgrade. Not sure exactly what happened there - I've got a USB serial adapter coming in the mail tomorrow, will be able to do some forensics then01:46
jfredI tried to fix that install from a chroot without success, but I was having trouble determining the actual issue so didn't have too much to go on01:47
jfredNext up, getting my old OS image migrated over01:48

bkeysminute: I got my keyboard and cm4 module03:30
bkeysThe problem I was having just went away, and it appears to work. I am downloading a new system image now03:30
bkeysTo anyone online, is the solder jump on the pins of the mpcie->m.2 adapter that comes with the cm4 adapter boards intentional? I wanted to make sure before I install it03:40
jfredbkeys: I believe it's the reset line bodge mentioned in this post, so yes intentional https://community.mnt.re/t/nvme-not-working-with-rcm4-fix-for-m-2-adapters/167403:48
bkeysjfred: Thanks, I actually have a WD drive in there03:49
jfredI do too actually, was glad mine came with the fix applied as well03:50
bkeysjfred: Does the SoM come with the system image installed on the eMMC?03:54
bkeysI sure hope so03:54
jfredI think no - I had to write an image to an SD card03:55
jfredwas looking up the banana pi cm4 module and apparently it will always prefer to boot from eMMC - so, I guess if they'd loaded a system image onto there, it'd be more difficult to get it booting off an SD card03:56
bkeysIt'd be nice to boot from eMMC so that would free up the SD card slot03:58
bkeysMany times I'd like to use the slot but am unable to03:58
jfredyeah, I'm in the same boat03:59
bkeysI'd love to have Fedora on there with all the /boot stuff in the eMMC and everything else on the nvme03:59
jfredI'd like to boot my system from eMMC too, but I want to get much more comfortable with the a311d module before attempting that as I've made a few blunders already just booting from SD haha04:00
bkeysI built RPM packages of the Reform kernel and have them on my ARM server04:00
bkeysAnd I have a khadas vim3 sbc which is a311d and it can run mainline Fedora no problems; so what I am saying is certainly possible.04:00
jfredyeah04:01
jfredmy expectation is that if you copied /boot onto the module's eMMC it would boot as expected, but I haven't tried it04:02
bkeysI got the adapter board in the mail today so right now I'm just gonna go stock to see how it is04:03
bkeysjfred: Do you know if the Reform can be charged using 12V?04:12

hramrachthe mPCIe latch on the Reform mainboard makes it very easy to get the WiFi card in and out but is not compatible with adapters like this https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006020799588.html11:29
minutehramrach: the main issue is that modems need usb signalling, but the mpcie on reform is pcie12:24
f_minute: seems like the cm4io should handle this?12:25
minutef_ hramrach has a mnt reform motherboard, not cm4io12:37
- chomwitt (QUIT: Ping timeout: 256 seconds) (~chomwitt@2a02:587:7a1f:e00:1ac0:4dff:fedb:a3f1)12:40
f_yes but I thought the motherboard also handled that?12:40
hramrachlooking at the shematic the USB pins of the mPCIe connector are not connected12:56
+ chomwitt (~chomwitt@ppp-94-67-217-242.home.otenet.gr)12:58
hramrachthat's sad, there is USB hub to handle the external ports but the internal connectors are not handled12:58
joschdoes the usb hub have a remaining free port that could be used for that?13:03
hramrachas far as I can tell it does not13:06
hramrachit would be kind of stupid to put a hub with extra ports on the board and not put the traces there13:08
- Boostisbetter (QUIT: Ping timeout: 256 seconds) (4a410829d7@irc.cheogram.com)13:12
hramrachhm, the unpopulated J12 should have two USB connections - ehough for the mPCIe and M.2(if it can be fit there - the pinout is not clear)13:18
minutehramrach: these are usb313:19
hramrachand that's a problem?13:20
vkoskivfwupd is taking up 121MB of RAM just sitting idle on my system, anyone else seeing the same?13:21
minutehramrach: you would need a modem that works with usb313:21
hramrachsome do claim USB3 compatibility but it's not a given13:22
vkoskivRestarted fwupd, now it's at 10.3MB13:25
minutehramrach: there are also new 5g modems that supposedly have pcie signalling, but untested13:27
hramrachright, this is something not normally visible but there are separate USB2 and USB3 connections in the external USB ports, and the J12 only has the USB3 signals, not hte USB213:28
hramrachthe USB2 signals are not connected anywhere /o\13:29
sevanvkoskiv: is there anything on the reform that receives firmware via fwupd?13:29
sevan(safe to just disable it?)13:30
minutehramrach: not true13:37
minutehramrach: they are on J913:38
minutehramrach: i would use something like nanohub to split J9 or J14 into two ports and use one for the modem13:38
minutehramrach: or if you are into PCB design, design an adapter that has a MTT type usb3 -> usb2 hub, or just use a usb stick on the outside, or do like josch and use a usb stick inside13:39
hramrachminute: thanks, missed that J9 is a connector - it does not have the connector frame in the schematic13:43
minutehramrach: you can find things with ctrl+f13:46
minuteand paste in the name of the label13:46
hramrachonly when you know there is something to look for13:46
+ Boostisbetter (4a410829d7@irc.cheogram.com)13:47
hramrachthe mPCIe adapter would take care of reset or whatever else but with the USB pins in the mPCIe unconnected it has to be USB stick or some custom hack13:48
joschthe nanohubs are always out of stock so what i did was to replace the usb-ports with JST PH 4 sockets on this one: https://manhattanproducts.us/products/manhattan-en-4-port-usb-20-micro-hub-160605?_pos=2&_sid=ffcb07468&_ss=r14:13
joschit's just a tiny bit bigger than the nanohub but widely available14:14

vkoskivsevan: fwupdmgf get-devices lists the EMMC chip, the PCIe/usb bridge, and my WD nvme. Only the nvme and emmc show as 'updatable'15:28
vkoskivfwupdmgr*15:28
vkoskivTheoretically, it should be possible to deliver updates to the keyboard and track{pad, ball} firmwares via fwupd now that they can be flashed without using the switch + reset button15:29
vkoskivCould be wrong though, I only learned about fwupd today, and have no clue how it does its thing.15:29
vkoskivUpdating the list shows '0 devices supported'15:30
vkoskivwireplumber has 28.6MB of memory resident. And as far as I can tell, all it does is to display the system volume in waybar15:44
vkoskivMy 486DX2-66 box with 32MB of RAM boots Linux 4.4, and that one only has 24MB available for the entire userspace15:45
vkoskivSo from that perspective, I'm really curious to see what on earth wireplumber is keeping in memory :D15:45
vkoskivAh, I think wireplumber does more than that, I was looking at the manpage for waybar-wireplumber(5)15:46

hramrachsoftware expands until it consumes all available memory, data expands until it consumes all available disk space ;-)17:19
hramrachMore seriously, the kernel uses memory as cache when available, both for IO buffers and program text pages. That can increase resident memory size on systems with more memory.17:21
hramrachjosch: that hub is  also sold out ;-)17:22
hramrachbut I get the idea - any USB hub and USB-M.2 adapter would do, basically17:23
