amospallaHi guys, just for curiosity, is there any idea of what SOCs could be available as upgrade in the future for the Pocket?10:47
amospallaI would love to get one, but the A53 is probably not enough powerful for my usage, I'm sad.10:48
joschamospalla: what is your usage? my reform is my only machine and even though it only has 4 GB of ram i've rarely missed anything10:50
amospallaMaybe I'm wrong, but is an A53 somewhat equivalent to a rasppi 3?10:51
amospallaI used for a year a GPD pocket 2, with a much powerful cpu compared to a rasppi3, and it was on the edge.10:51
amospallaIt has an intel core m3-8100Y10:53
joschi think the next modules to come out are the LS1028A and the rpi cm4 adapter board10:55
joschmore options are apparently also currently being evaluated: https://mastodon.social/@mntmn/10999860178792387510:55
amospallaI'll mostly use web, terminal (ssh'ing), and pycharm, the most demanding is probably pycharm, which was on the edge on the intel.10:59
amospallaThank you for your feedback, I'll think a bit about it :)10:59
joschpersonally for me, i mostly felt limitations for very javascript-heavy websites11:04
joschbut then again i already hated javascript for wasting computational resources for no good reason long before i switched to the reform :D11:05
amospallaYes, that is what happened with the gpd too, but it is the price to pay.11:11

amospallaAs of some online benchmark sites, an RK3588 is similar or a bit better (depending on the site) than that intel core. That would be an amazing option. I hope someday I can buy one pocket reform with such a powerful soc.11:14
- mjw (QUIT: Ping timeout: 246 seconds) (~wielaard@gnu.wildebeest.org)11:21
minuteamospalla: the imx8mplus a53 is quite fast, runs at 1.8ghz and can be overclocked, also 14nm process helps11:33
minuteamospalla: rk3588 upgrade is planned, but open drivers (esp graphics) for that chip are still in heavy development11:34
amospallaThank you minute !11:47

joschminute: remember how my old trackball broke because some misterious white liquid was covering the sensor? (no idea what it was -- i blame the baby)12:00
joschminute: turns out, today, a few weeks later, after having attempted to clean it with circuit board cleaner it now works again12:01
joschokay, it's something with the sensor itself12:07
joschif i attach the sensor from my old module (which is working now) to the new trackball module (the rpi version) it works fine again12:07

joschminute: so i have a working trackball setup again. The sensor that came with the new (rpi) trackball module doesn't work with either of my two modules so i guess something is wrong with the sensor? I'll attempt cleaning it again. Any product you recommend for doing that?12:37
pandora[m]I would love to get the rk3588 for the pocket. I saw a few videos and benchmarks and it looks really promising . It also has options for up to 32 hbu of ram and 128 gb emmc . That would make it a quite future proofed and long lasting option. Development time would be well spendend there12:40

minutejosch: hmm, a bit of IPA? but normally nothing heavy should be required. or maybe those wet wipes for glasses18:08
joschminute: thanks! i'll try cleaning more thoroughly tomorrow. If that doesn't work, is there anything else i can check? Since the old sensor is working fine with both boards (ver 1.0 and ver 2.0) I guess the culprit has to be the sensor.18:17
joschI also tried switching the cables but both cables work fine.18:17
minutemaybe a manufacturing issue with the sensor pcb, in that case--my apologies18:19
minute(we can replace it)18:19
joschThanks but since it was working fine at first it must've been me who managed to break it somehow. And since the old module is working fine (again) there is no urgent need for a new sensor here either. :)18:22
minutecool!18:24
minutehappy to hear that modularity actually helps :)18:24
minutepocket campaign is at 97%18:24
joschYes, having the old module to switch parts around was really helpful to figure out what's broken. I used to have several parts twice or thrice for my old thinkpad so that i can swap them out once they break. I'm now starting that collection for the reform. ;)18:32
joschUnfortunately I wasn't able to convince my partner to get a Reform as well (so another thinkpad it is) or otherwise I'd have the luxery of even more spare parts at home. :D18:39

- S0rin (QUIT: Ping timeout: 246 seconds) (~S0rin@user/s0rin)18:40

+ S0rin (~S0rin@user/s0rin)18:41
minutejosch: yeah, lets see if rk3588 will fix that18:43
joschThe rk3588 sounds nice but as far as i understand there are still a lot of rough edges on the kernel side and experience shows that smoothing them out can take a looooong time. :D18:46
minuteyep18:47
joschSo I rather have a 100% stable (except for suspend) imx8mq rather than a rk3588 where 100 small things do not work sometimes. :D18:47
minuteyeah, i will probably have two machines, one stable and one unstable... and at least one pocket18:48
minutelots of laptops to haul around lol18:48
- MajorBiscuit (QUIT: Ping timeout: 276 seconds) (~MajorBisc@145.94.168.115)18:51
jfredOne of the reasons I'm most excited about the Pocket Reform is on days when I'm visiting the local hackerspace it's less laptop to haul around. I have to have my work laptop with me and really don't like carrying two full size laptops19:00
minutejfred: makes sense!19:00
jfred...in part because I have a bad back, haha19:00
minuteoh :(19:02
joschbut there is also the "thin" reform on the todo list, no? :)19:05

minutetoday we got an email from nlnet about that (and another) project, stating that they are swamped with applications, so processing is delayed19:05
