vkoskivWill there be an apt upgrade soon that adds the new u-boot changes or does that require extra steps to install?14:21
vkoskivIf I remember correctly it was some package with a hook that then regenerates the u-boot stuff14:21
joschvkoskiv: no, no package is doing anything with u-boot itself14:31
joschvkoskiv: we only have flash-kernel which writes out a boot.scr14:33
joschvkoskiv: this is actually a big problem -- we currently have no way to automatically ship u-boot updates to reform users14:33
joschit's more like lpc and keyboard firmware: u-boot has to be upgraded by the user without the use of the package manager14:34
+ mtm (~mtm@c-71-228-84-213.hsd1.fl.comcast.net)15:08
minuteflowy: yes it's locked in, there isn't a viable alternative. the panels availability is also pretty good15:41
minutejosch: couldn't we package the fw and a script in reform-tools?15:42
minutejosch: and we can also package keyboard firmware. lpc not yet as we don't have a self upgrade mechanism in the fw (i believe it is possible though)15:43
minuteflowy: 8 inch displays are exotic afaik15:44
minuteflowy: what are your thoughts about the ratio btw?15:53
minuteresolution is 1920x120015:53

flowyminute: i'm not personally so picky about ratios! i guess i prefer vertical. however for a portable device i think less bezel is the larger concern, but i guess for this size anything wider just isn't available?16:00
BoostisbetterI think that should an option become available in the future, it could be a upgrade or a v2 addition that all could upgrade to. 16:01
BoostisbetterReally not worried. 16:01
BoostisbetterAnd I love that it has more vertical than standard 1080p16:01
flowywould be fun to have a pocket dock, sort of like the nintendo switch, for 'desktop mode'. for me, if i didn't already have a reform, this would make the pocket a more viable option if i had to pick between them16:08
flowyi mean obv you can just plug shit in, but i like the idea of a proper dock would be cute16:08
flowyhold it vertical16:09
flowyi have been travelling again w my reform for the last month and a half. so happy with it16:12
flowyi don't personally have a need for the pocket just excited to see it developed16:13
flowywould 100% get the som to upgrade the reform though, if there aren't any caveats16:15
Boostisbetter Yeah i can't wait to get the Pocket. I totally have a need for it, and am really excited to be able to get one. 16:16
flowyi did do some little remote networking jobs where i had a bunch of tools with me and needed a basic terminal. for that i would definitely have preferred the pocket to the chonkier reform, but don't have that much expendable $16:18
minuteah yeah, interesting 16:29
minutebtw we are about to launch an 8mplus upgrade kit16:29
flowy!! awesome16:38

BoostisbetterDrooling for the pocket Reform over here. I am using a Penkesu to do basically all that I would do with the Pocket but the Pocket will have just a lot more capabilities and have a real robust enclosure. It is perfect for me, and I can't wait. 16:58
minuteBoostisbetter: out of interest, can you tell us some of your main use cases for penkesu/pocket?17:01

Boostisbetter minute: I have been interested in ultra portable computing for quite some time. I had a OQO 01, and 02. Several Fujitsu Lifebooks, etc. The idea of being able to compute on the go has always appealed to me. After I started working as a software engineer my needs only increased, and instead of just interest and curiosity I needed to be able to do specific things. 18:10
Boostisbetterminute: Currently I commute to work via a Velomobile, and size matters. But also because there are vibrations from the road, etc. I need something is a bit more robust. The Penkesu was the result of my previous UMPC 1 Netbook Onemix 3pt just dying one day. I was tired of these kinds of devices just being dead when they had any problems. So the Penkesu, although, really under powered, just provide18:12
Boostisbetterd a way for me to get work done, and not worry about it breaking. The Pocket Reform is basically a Penkesu to me, that is WAY more robust and more powerful. 18:12
BoostisbetterI use it for software development, remote system administration, documentation, chat, email, and internet usage. 18:12
bkeysminute: That is great news18:15
minuteBoostisbetter: i see, thanks for the insights18:20
+ bgs (~bgs@212-85-160-171.dynamic.telemach.net)18:20
bkeysI know you have been busy with the imx8mplus stuff but is there any updates on the cm4 stuff?18:21
Boostisbetterminute: the Pocket will really be about being to work on my side software projects during a lunch break or other breaks. Much nicer than trying to do all of that through a phone and vnc session. 18:21
minuteBoostisbetter: ahh, i see18:22
minutebkeys: not sure if i wrote about it here... i found some big flaws in my design and have to respin the stdp2600. another new thing is that i ordered the banana pi cm4 module... which might have better mipi dsi capabilities not requiring an adapter18:23
minutehaven't given up on cm4, it's just a bit lower priority18:23
bkeysACTION nods18:23
bkeysThanks for the update18:23

minutethe chip on the banana pi cm4 also has more punch than the rpi418:24
minuteit's amlogic a311d18:24
minutethe name is a bit unfortunate. maybe we could convince them to sell us some unbranded ones ;)18:25
bkeysWhat kind of GPU support is it gonna get?18:27
bkeysCause the biggest draw for the cm4 other than Fedora is higher opengl/vulkan versions18:27
minutethat is true, the vulkan driver for videocore is interesting18:35
minutea311d should be at least OpenGL ES 3.1 via panfrost18:35
minute> the wider Mesa community especially focused on Mali-G52 GPU, found for instance in Amlogic A311D and Rockchip RK356618:36
minute> The Panfrost driver on Mali-G52 is conformant for OpenGL ES 3.118:36
bkeysThat would be satisfactory for my purposes18:39

minutehardware that can support Vulkan properly, even Bifrost Vulkan is a slow mess18:40
minutethat you wouldn't want to use for anything if you had another option18:40
minuteso, vulkan on g-52 is possible but not recommended18:41

joschminute: yes, of course we can make upgrading u-boot more user-friendly. My point is, that we cannot automate it and thus i do not see a good way to switch away from boot.scr to extlinux.conf. I'll have to think more about that21:52
