Boostisbetter | so I am having a weird issue with wifi connectivity. It almost feels like there is competing processes trying to handle the wifi connection and that is causing it to never finish connecting. This happens the most when resuming from standby. It will not connect until I disable wifi via Gnome settings and then re-enable it. | 13:01 |
Boostisbetter | but even then when it connects it will disconnect and try to reconnect. Most of the times this is successful, and then the connection is stable. | 13:01 |
josch | Boostisbetter: is there anything about the output you are having trouble with? | 13:02 |
- mtm (QUIT: Ping timeout: 264 seconds) (~mtm@c-71-228-84-213.hsd1.fl.comcast.net) | 13:03 | |
Boostisbetter | I tried doing a lot of what the scripts was saying I should do and it wasn't working. I think my system is a frankenstein. | 13:08 |
Boostisbetter | I'm kind of worried about poking things, because I really don't want things to break. hahaha | 13:08 |
josch | Boostisbetter: want me to walk you through some of the things? | 13:09 |
Boostisbetter | would be great actually | 13:09 |
josch | Boostisbetter: it would help me with improving reform-check if i could understand your current setup a bit better | 13:09 |
Boostisbetter | sure, how can I help there? | 13:10 |
josch | Boostisbetter: can you show me your /etc/fstab as well as the output of findmnt and ls -lha /boot | 13:10 |
josch | i'd also like to see uname -a and dpkg -l | grep linux-image | 13:11 |
Boostisbetter | ok, right now it is installing a bunch of the things the script said were missing. I didn't grab things like minetest or firefox-esr, for example, but the things that seemed useful I picked up. | 13:13 |
Boostisbetter | but for my fstab it says that it is unconfigured. | 13:14 |
josch | please pastebin the exact output of the commands and file contents :) | 13:14 |

Boostisbetter | https://pastebin.com/8XBX5bj0 | 13:17 |
josch | oh no XD | 13:17 |
Boostisbetter | and here is uname -a | 13:18 |
Boostisbetter | Linux reform 5.12.0+ #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Jun 10 15:07:50 CEST 2021 aarch64 GNU/Linux | 13:18 |
Boostisbetter | the last dpkg command returns nothing | 13:18 |
josch | phew... | 13:19 |
josch | okay, the good news is, that the reform-check utility doesn't seem to lie about what it reports | 13:19 |
josch | to help you, let me improve reform-check so that it gives you some output that better helps you in fixing your system | 13:20 |
josch | what puzzles me though is how you got into your current situation -- is this a system from before sysimage-v3? | 13:20 |
Boostisbetter | that would be great. I have felt like I'm on the edge here for a while, and getting some stability back would be great. | 13:20 |
Boostisbetter | Yes, I had v2 and that is all I've ever used. | 13:20 |
Boostisbetter | I did a raw update and full-upgrade and that set all of this in motion. | 13:21 |
Boostisbetter | I have done that probably 8 times now | 13:21 |
josch | Boostisbetter: turns out you didn't actually upgrade the reform stuff because you are missing /etc/apt/preferences.d/reform.pref ;) | 13:21 |
Boostisbetter | well that sucks. I have manually applied some reform specific things though | 13:21 |
Boostisbetter | no idea which ones, but anything the suspend script required I have get up to date. | 13:22 |
Boostisbetter | I use suspend A LOT | 13:22 |
josch | Boostisbetter: can you remember which? | 13:22 |
Boostisbetter | no sadly I don't | 13:22 |
josch | Boostisbetter: after each upgrade you reported that suspend didn't break but that is no surprise because you never upgraded your kernel ;) | 13:22 |
Boostisbetter | well that is good | 13:23 |
Boostisbetter | although I would much rather be wear I am supposed to be system wise. | 13:23 |
josch | Boostisbetter: do you have a second machine around to take a snapshot and that you can use to restore your reform to a working state in case something goes wrong? | 13:23 |
Boostisbetter | I just have put a lot of work into the system gettings things set up in a way that works for me. | 13:23 |
Boostisbetter | I have a Librem 5 that uses the same SoC, but I also have a Framework laptop running Ubuntu but is, of course, x86 | 13:25 |
josch | Boostisbetter: it would just be useful for you to have a way to take a snapshot of your current state so that you can restore things to how they are right now in case things go wrong. | 13:25 |
Boostisbetter | Well I think I might have just hosed it. | 13:28 |
josch | What did you do and what is happening? | 13:28 |
Boostisbetter | rebooted after updating things based on what the script sad was missing, and now I'm not getting dropped into the ttl on startup | 13:28 |
josch | What are you getting instead? | 13:29 |
Boostisbetter | last thing loaded was Record Runlevel Change in UTMP | 13:29 |
Boostisbetter | in grey text the network managers has verbiage being displayed. | 13:30 |
Boostisbetter | well I poushed alt f-2 and it dropped me in the ttl | 13:30 |
Boostisbetter | sway is loading now | 13:30 |
josch | Boostisbetter: you should not've installed these packages because you don't have /etc/apt/preferences.d/reform.pref (as the script told you) and that means that you didn't get the patched packages from the reform repo | 13:31 |
josch | okay, that's good | 13:31 |
josch | before you proceed, maybe you want to take a snapshot of your system? | 13:31 |
josch | unfortunately i have to run now and pick up my baby from kindergarten | 13:32 |
Boostisbetter | absolutely no problem. I can set this to the side for a while as well. Thank you for the help. | 13:33 |
josch | i've moved the /etc/apt/preferences.d/reform.pref check above the check for missing packages and added a warning that nothing should be installed without having /etc/apt/preferences.d/reform.pref in place | 13:35 |
