josch_chartreu1e: a really crappy rolling release. Yesterday my upload of dash destroyed unstable for six hours.07:13
* josch_ -> josch07:13
joschA more reliable rolling release is "testing". The downside to both testing and unstable is, that it is frozen for a few months when the next stable release gets prepared.07:14
joschThere are regular initiatives to add a real rolling release to Debian which will not be frozen before the release but it never gets implemented because we lack the resources to do both: prepare the release a new stable version (and reduce number of release critical bugs to zero) *and* upload new packages and fix the bugs that new uploads cause07:16
* chartreu1e -> chartreuse07:47
chartreuseYeah that's true, a true rolling testing would be a nice feature. 07:54

ex-parrotjosch: ty, it's good to have some clarity direct from someone in the project about this09:39
ex-parrotI had been thinking for years that "testing" was probably less stable than "unstable" due to release engineering breaking things09:39
joschIt's actually the opposite. Even during release preparations, uploads are done to "unstable" first and only move to "testing" if they don't introduce new bugs.09:40

BoostisbetterSo stable is most likely the best of the releases to go with if you would like at least some what current software? 13:11

+ MajorBiscuit (~MajorBisc@86-88-79-148.fixed.kpn.net)13:32
joschBoostisbetter: unless there are release critical bugs in a package, testing is only 2-5 days behind unstable as far as its versions are up-to-date -- unless of course testing is frozen because a new release is being prepared (happens every 2 years)13:36
Boostisbetterjosch: makes sense. I just never thought about testing kind of being the best of both worlds. You get more current software but still maintain a level of stability Debian is known for. 13:37

joschI wouldn't really agree. Unless you know what you are doing, I'd advise against using testing. Every time you upgrade, chances are you upgrade to something that breaks your system. This can be incredible time consuming if you do it regularly. And you should because otherwise you don't get security fixes.13:39

Boostisbetterjosch: Oh yeah, don't I know. I've experienced that on the Reform already, and thanks to all the help here, still have a functional Reform. 14:07
Boostisbetterjosch: my first experience with Debian proper was PureOS. It worked really well, but didn't have a lot of repos I needed, so I ended up just going Ubuntu LTS. 14:08
BoostisbetterThese days, I'm torn at the distro I should go with for good. I REALLY like Mint, but there lack of Wayland support, kind of makes it feel like I would be saddling up on a horse that isn't going to cross the finish line. On top of that Wayland is just way more secure, while far more efficient than X. I don't really understand why people DON'T want to already get onboard when xwayland is a thing a14:09
