technomancyI've been on sid since I got my reform but it kinda makes me nervous; is there a way to switch to something less volatile but still get the necessary reform-specific packages?01:51
mntmntechnomancy: soon!01:52
technomancygreat; will keep an eye out =)01:53
technomancyI haven't actually run into problems with sid; just nervous from like a decade ago when I tried it and got burned by some glibc bump or something01:53
bkeysmntmn: Did you ever figure out why CS moved the shipping date to March?01:54
mntmnbkeys: i think it might be for new or very recent orders01:54
mntmnthey did not communicate with me about it01:54
mntmnpretty soon we'll hopefully ship around 100 laptops to them so that should clear more than half the backlog01:55
mntmndepending on how long mouser still takes with telling us yep, you can send the things now01:56
mntmnalso we negotiated to use mouser's ups rates for this because then it will not totally bankrupt us (only a bit)01:56
mntmnthe biggest headache is airfreight regulations that say you can have max 5kg net weight in a package with devices with lithium batteries01:57
bkeysYeah that makes sense, would it make your life easier to offer an option without the batteries? (since you can get 18650 batteries from anywhere)?01:58
ex-parrotit's not that easy to get the lifpo4s though01:59
ex-parrote.g. here I still don;t have a good supplier01:59
bkeysI see01:59
ex-parrotnot necessarily that easy, anyway02:00
mntmnyeah, it depends02:59
vkoskivre: financials - What's the best way to support MNT beyond buying the laptop?02:59
vkoskivswag? :D03:00
mntmnvkoskiv: perhaps the keyboards we offer on shop.mntmn.com ^^ but we'll come up with some donation thing && some useful merch also03:02
vkoskivNeat, I'll keep an eye out for that. Currently I'm thinking of getting a sleeve, since I didn't get one when ordering the laptop03:06
mntmnah yeah.03:13
mntmnok it's 3am here, good night everyone03:13

_2disbetterSo CS supply issues aside, are orders from MNT direct being affected by this issue? Should we be seeing shipping notifications shortly? I'm not pushy just like to know if a delay is to be expected. Thanks for all of the MNT team's work and efforts. It is greatly appreciated!12:09

dustfingernm. I see on my order page that the Currently estimated to ship on Mar 18, 2022. It was originally estimated to ship on Dec 9th. Why did the schedule slip? I thought the last computer was assembled at the end of August.13:14

mntmndustfinger: hey, that was about the crowdfunded orders. those are all shipped to backers13:34
mntmndustfinger: after june 18, 2020, the crowdsupply page turned into a "shop" page so those orders are fulfilled by crowdsupply/mouser, and we have to send them that stock. but the bureaucracy of setting us up with mouser logistics has been dragging on forever13:35

chartreusedustfinger: Any minipcie wireless card is likely compatible, though ath9k based n cards are recommended as they're blob free with an open source driver. For my reform I got a used Airport Extreme N internal card which is ath9k based but has a 3x3 antenna setup instead17:27
chartreuseCombined with having a 3x3 router it lets me get up to 450mbit/s rather than 300mbit/s that a 2x2 wireless n setup is limited to17:28
chartreuseWireless ac is probably an option too though minipcie is less popular for those, but I don't know if any are blob free17:29

patrickThere are no 802.11ac blob-free cards unfortunately. My vague recollection is that the ath5k/ath9k atheros cards lack a microprocessor, so all of the 802.11 logic is implemented by the host, with no need for firmware. Whereas these newer cards have a lot of that logic in the firmware itself. Half explaining why the blobs are so large, and half explaining why Candela had to sign an NDA with18:27

chartreuseThough if I want quieter I can go back to my other laptop an x230 with x220 keyboard22:50
technomancyoh yeah removing the browns out of the stock board is really rough since they use lead-free solder22:51
chartreuseI do like linear switches, but these browns don't quite feel tactile, while also not feeling like a linear switch22:51
technomancyI replaced my left-click with a choc white and it doesn't quite sit perfectly the way it used to22:51
chartreuseIs there a linear version of these switches as well?22:51
chartreuseAh fair, yeah getting the solder right after removing them would be annoying, you'd have to really clean both sides of the holes out22:52
chartreuseI'm not sure how to describe this right for searching, but is there a way on sway to make a window open on the workspace that it was spawned from even if I swap away before it fully opens?22:53
chartreuseLike I open up firefox on a different workspace, if I tab over here to check IRC before it launches it'll appear on this workspace22:54
chartreuseIt'd be nice that if I spawn it from workplace 3 it opens on workplace 3 even if I tab (besides making it so firefox always appears on 3)22:54
technomancygod I forgot what a huge improvement choc white on the mouse is since taking it for granted after a wihle22:56
technomancyhighly recommended22:56
chartreuseWhen the MNT was originally going to have an option of what switches you wanted I wasn't sure and might have went browns anyway since I was undecided22:56
chartreuseWhites seem like a nice option though so might give that a try at some point22:56
technomancyI think it's a reasonable default for the keyboard even if they're not my favorite22:57
technomancybut not the mouse =)22:57
chartreuseOkay there is a red linear which also might be something I like, or the lighter Pro red22:57
chartreuseMight need to grab a sample pack22:57
chartreuseI just like a very smooth switch, or a smooth but with a click22:57
kfxchartreuse: https://github.com/swaywm/sway/issues/323422:58
chartreuseAh thanks, so it's an issue with it then22:59
kfxwith the | swaymsg exec -- syntax it works with SOME programs, but anything that launches a child process escapes22:59
ex-parrotI don't suppose anyone has made progress in getting X working?22:59
technomancyex-parrot: just Xwayland23:00
chartreuseI'll try that, though I don't know if firefox's GUI is in the parent or child process with its sandboxes23:00
- S0rin (QUIT: Ping timeout: 240 seconds) (~S0rin@user/s0rin)23:00
+ Boosterfive (~Boosterfi@pd9e6ff47.dip0.t-ipconnect.de)23:00
chartreuseYou can xwayland an entire x window manager if you want23:00
chartreuseIt can be the root23:00
technomancychartreuse: yeah that's what I do23:01
technomancycan't handle running a browser outside exwm23:01
chartreuseI've been honestly liking sway on here so I've been fine with being all wayland. Hasn't been an issue though23:01
+ S0rin (~S0rin@user/s0rin)23:01
BoosterfiveSway is pretty excellent. I configured it on a Librem 13, and had it on the Framework for a while as well. I feel prepared for setting it up on the Reform when it arrives. 23:01
chartreuseFair yeah, especially if you want the vim shortcuts23:01
chartreuseI've configured mine mostly just by making it more a windows 9x looking swaybar :P23:02
chartreuseGrey with borders to make it look 3d23:02
BoosterfiveYeah, swaybar, is pretty configurable, and I like that. 23:02
technomancyI wouldn't mind sway if firefox hadn't ditched the ability to rebind keys23:02
ex-parrotmm I've been trying sway but I don't yet like it enough23:02
ex-parrotI started working on trying to get X working but I haven't had the time23:02
ex-parrotso i am just hoping someone else figures it out for me :P23:03
BoosterfiveI gave up on Firefox a decade ago. 23:03
chartreuseYou can use any of the standard x window managed/de's under xwayland if you prefer 23:03
chartreuseLike the reform ships with WindowMaker already installed which is x only23:03
technomancyBoosterfive: firefox got their busted-ass extension mechanism directly from chrome =\23:03
chartreuseThe idea was for security and sandboxing with WebExtensions and ditching XUL (and also performance related to that), but the API lacks advanced permissions/features for completely redoing the interface still23:04
ex-parrotyeah I know about xwayland23:04
ex-parrotI kept running in to bugs :(23:04
chartreuseThough just look at the chome webstore to see that it's much more riddled with malware than the firefox store is and ever was23:05
ex-parrotcurrently I just have no X or Wayland installed on my reform and that is nice too :)23:05
ex-parrotGoogle has been making some small efforts to clean up the extension store but it's not enough 23:05
chartreuseThe terminal works well if you don't mind a text based browser, or the weirdness of w3m or such on framebuffer23:05
technomancyex-parrot: I've been running XWayland as my primary since ... uh july or so23:06
technomancywhat kind of bugs have you seen?23:06
technomancyI'd be a lot more inclined to skip X/Wayland altogether if I could get 256-color emacs -nw23:06
- Boosterfive (QUIT: Remote host closed the connection) (~Boosterfi@pd9e6ff47.dip0.t-ipconnect.de)23:07
ex-parrottechnomancy: I was having problems with things like scrolling windows that were near the bottom of the screen, context menus opening in the wrong place23:08
ex-parrotit's been a few months since I was last trying it23:08
technomancyhuh, never seen anything like that23:09
ex-parrotlike e.g. if I had a terminal too close to the bottom of the disply23:09
ex-parrotand I wanted to select downwards and have it sroll down23:09
ex-parrotit wouldn't scroll23:09
ex-parrotjust kind of werid stuff like that which drove me mildly insane :(23:10
kfxI just tried it on alpine with this config:  https://mntre.com/media/tech_notes_md/2018-11-19-using-modesetting-with-etnaviv.html23:10
technomancyex-parrot: and that was consistent across multiple WMs?23:10
kfxno errors in xorg.0.log, but no picture either :)23:10
ex-parrotdidn't try23:12
ex-parrotjust i323:12
ex-parrotkfx: that was about the point I go tto as well23:12
ex-parrotI started adding debugging prints to xorg and rebuilding it23:12
ex-parrotand then I've been too busy23:12
ex-parrottechnomancy: I havwn't really spent enough proper time on debugging it23:12
ex-parrotmy reform has been sitting on my bench unlobed for a couple of months :(23:13
kfxreform-standby seems to work without trouble in alpine as well23:14
ex-parrotinteresting!23:15
