flowyso in this new reform-system-image i've built, for some reason the output of 'blkid' is empty while executing /sbin/reform-init during boot. which means it fails to detect my encrypted luks partition. then it falls back to sd card, i login - and voila blkid returns the expected output. (i've determined it's empty during boot by adding some debugging)00:28

flowymntmn: in /sbin/reform-init, i had to add a command to the top to mount sysfs in order for the script to function properly.00:48
flowyi'm not sure if this is the right place to fix this or not. /sys was unavailable causing blkid to return nothing00:49

erlehmannig all the cell death where the users (like me) did not heed the warnings could have been avoided by an easily reachable physical off switch. mntmn obv you decided against that, but are you considering to re-introduce it now?14:56
mntmnerlehmann: i'm sure that people would then forget to turn off this switch14:57
erlehmannmntmn that is not a yes, but a no. i will have to figure out how to jury-rig it myself then.14:59
erlehmanni hope it is not too hard – i am not good with hardware, after all (or my cells would have survived)15:00
erlehmanni am thinking of the physical off switch also in terms of maintenance btw15:00
erlehmann(and yes i know about having to disconnect the battery board)15:01
erlehmannbtw, i never *forgot* about the switch. i just thought it could not possibly be that bad that the thing ruins itself that much.15:04
erlehmannfor me it is the difference between the easily removable sd card on reform 2 vs the onboard one on reform 115:04
erlehmann*way* easier to just reach around and try some disk image changes with the new design15:04

vkoskivmntmn: If you want to stress-test that risc-v setup, my raytracer is fairly easy to compile.15:54
vkoskivI don't think it's been run on risc-v yet, but it should work.15:54
vkoskivIt runs on old SPARC cpus, at least15:54
vkoskivAnd MIPS15:55
mntmnvkoskiv: sure, any dependencies?16:12
mntmnor is it self contained?16:12
vkoskivcmake and a c compiler16:12
vkoskivhttps://github.com/vkoskiv/c-ray16:12
vkoskivOther than that, self-contained. I don't know if you have a compiler on the risc-v system yet, I haven't tried cross-compiling it myself.16:13
vkoskivFairly certain I could write up a makefile to remove cmake as a dependency as well, been meaning to do that.16:13
mntmnvkoskiv: i don't have a self-hosting compiler, only an assembler so far16:30

vkoskivmntmn: Yeah, stuffing gcc on there might be a bit optimistic for now. I've only used gcc and clang for development16:34
vkoskivtcc might work, but its command-line arguments are non-standard, so I haven't tried it myself16:35
mntmnvkoskiv: i've only now built and run my first binary (that is not part of buildroot)16:35
vkoskivI'm writing a plain makefile for the project, it's a nice thing to have for unix people who don't strictly need cmake16:35
vkoskivcmake is only there for windows people. And for convenient optional dependency checking16:36
mntmnvkoskiv: very nice looking example renders btw16:39

khmerlehmann: the off switch doesn't protect against shorting something against a battery terminal.  what I did instead is buy protected cells and it seems to have worked out for me.18:57
erlehmannkhm what is a protected cell?18:57
erlehmannkhm i meant as protection against killing the battery when the device is not turned on for a whilee18:58
khmit's got a chip in it which monitors for over-discharge and other harmful events, and cuts the circuit to prevent cell damage18:58
khmyes, that's what the protected cells protect against18:59
khmI bought them, installed them, and abused the hell out of the system.  in the worst case they confuse the reform's battery monitor (because they produce no power when they're discharged below a certain threshold) but then you plug the machine in and all's well19:00
erlehmannnice19:08
mntmnkhm: very interesting! 19:11

mntmnkhm: cool so probably the same ones with added protection?19:29
khmthey're a few mm longer than the stock cells, so the battery clips sort of splay a little.  I put electrical tape on the backs of the terminals where I was worried they'd jostle against the case19:29
