FUZxxlmntmn: good!15:21
FUZxxlmntmn: I've eventually decided not to back the Reform ATM because it is uncertain if it's going to run with FreeBSD and because 4 GB RAM is going to be a bit tight for my workload.15:26
FUZxxlThough I'd really like to have one if there is any progress in this regard.15:26
mntmnyou might like the next update article that i'm writing right now, then.15:29

MellowlinkFUZxxl: i think this can be compensated with bigger swap size since there should be a very fast nvme ssd in it.16:10
+ AuroraSlay (52d08fc2@gateway/web/cgi-irc/kiwiirc.com/ip.82.208.143.194)16:11
FUZxxlMellowlink: swap isn't very useful if e.g. the compiler wants that much RAM16:12
FUZxxlswap will help with background RAM usage though16:13
Mellowlinki already compiled stuff like qtwebengine on rpi running gentoo. all i had to do was to remove the "-pipe" option for compiler. it did not use any ram but it was slower ofc16:15
FUZxxlMellowlink: as an example, I have a RPi3 running FreeBSD and compiling the base distribution is a real PITA due to the lack of RAM.16:16

FUZxxlTakes about 35 hours and I need to drop down to -j1 because otherwise it crashes with some complex C++ source files16:16
Mellowlinksame here i always had to drop to -j1 too, it sure takes a time but it's not like new stable version of gcc, llvm or some web rending engine comes every week16:20
FUZxxlyeah.  But I'm a programmer, so compiling code is my daily bread and butter.  If the machine can't do that reasonably fast, it's not for me.16:21
MellowlinkI can see your point but I can't really judge your situation since I don't know on how big projects you work or which language you are using. There are still workarounds for this tho. Currently I'm using t420, it's CPU isn't really the fastest so for compiling bigger stuff I use a remote server. Many software companies these days got dedicated machines just for compiling.16:35

jackhillmntmn: pretty HDMI pictures! Does that still require the blob?22:17
mntmnjackhill: yep!22:17
mntmnbtw i was wondering, there is a newish HDMI driver by NXP that i'm using, and apparently it can load the HDMI blob, too... i wonder if that way the signature is checked22:18
mntmnbecause normally its checked by the boot ROM afaik22:18
jackhillgotcha22:18
mntmnif we can work around the signature, there's a longterm chance to replace it with something reverse engineered22:19
mntmnbecause the blob can be disassembled easily22:19
jackhillhehehe :) hopefully!22:19
jackhillI should get another iMX8 computer to play with while I wait for reform. I'm not close to having the skills or time to help with the graphics stuff, but I could at least play with my userspace and test things22:22
mntmnhere's the load routine https://source.mntmn.com/MNT/reform-system-image/src/branch/reform2-redo/reform2-imx8mq/template-kernel/patches/mnt3003-MNT-Reform-import-cadence-HDMI-driver-for-imx8mq-fro.patch#L257822:24
mntmnjackhill: this one is pretty cheap, but haven't tried it myself https://coral.ai/products/dev-board22:25
khmI'm still waiting for mine to ship :/22:27
jackhillmntmn: thanks. I'm also looking at the some of these: https://www.solid-run.com/nxp-i-mx8m-family/22:27
jackhilland of course there is Boundry Devices :)22:28
