Jookia | Yeah, after experiencing the librem 5 devkit I'm fairly sure the switch to the i.MX8 is causing more trouble than its worth | 22:42 |
---|---|---|
swivel | Jookia: care to elaborate? | 22:49 |
Jookia | swivel: Power and heat issues and driver issues mainly | 23:08 |
swivel | hmm, power and heat not too unexpected for early stages of a mobile soc dev kit | 23:37 |
swivel | might not have thermal and power management enabled yet | 23:37 |
swivel | it'll probably be a tall order to get that thing working in a smartphone if they can't get the open-air dev kit to stay cool though :/ | 23:39 |
Jookia | yeah | 23:41 |
Jookia | it gets around 60 degrees idling | 23:41 |
swivel | Jookia: and that increases substantially when loaded or is it just always burning power as if it's under load? | 23:47 |
Jookia | not sure, i can't think of anything to put it under load because i can't install anything because networking is broken | 23:47 |
mntmn | jookia very very interesting | 23:51 |
mntmn | jookia i guess completely custom kernel? what is the distro/userland? | 23:52 |
Jookia | debian buster with emcraft-linux, so it's really nothing special | 23:52 |
swivel | Jookia: well, you can do something trivial like running a bunch of 'yes > /dev/null &', one per core, and observe the temps | 23:56 |
Jookia | i could, shall do that next week or something | 23:56 |
swivel | Jookia: what are you doing with the devkit? | 23:58 |
Jookia | Nothing atm since it's not that useful. I got u-boot and Linux compiled from source but that's a bug that means Linux only detects the SD card slot (attached by a USB controller) when loaded off of eMMC and booting to eMMC (maybe systemd is fixing something) | 23:59 |
